Tropes Vs Women 2 - Damsels In Distress Part Two : Circular Arguments Strike Back
#51
I can't actually think of any additional entitlement programs the government can provide exclusively for women that wouldn't over privilege them on the basis of their gender. With respect to the Equal Opportunity Employment and sexual harassment laws in place, the only thing limiting women to protest is having trouble finding a lawyer... which I find dubious given the saturation of the profession. For that matter, what types of discrimination do women feel exist and are these even significant or addressable within the framework of a solutions oriented approach? When my dad was attending school in Congo when it was formerly known as Zaire, he would be bullied and told to board the next banana boat to his home country. But when women are discriminated, it comes in the form of complimenting on their physical beauty or underestimating their work potential, however these cases aren't blatant discrimination even though it is often joked that women should be working in the kitchen.

Another reason that I find this entire gender bias x video games to be a stretch narrative is because the content of these posts contain nothing about offensive video games or feminism. If we were to actually discuss this as a real issue, then I assume the people that agree with Sarkeesian would make a list of video games that are notable for promoting gender bias and then we could have an actual discussion about whether these games are baseless enough to merit consideration of revision or ban. This would actually involve us taking an original stance on the subject matter, which is video games. By generalizing and lumping video games together as a whole, we assume that all games and companies are run by the same business mentality as others. What we fail in this approach is to establish common ground. Unfortunately doing this strips the topic into what it actually is, a parts to whole flaw by taking the worst part of some games and then blowing them out of proportion to reflect the gaming genre as a whole. PhantomRes mentioned Grand Theft Auto which contains sexual use of hookers to replenish health points, but in context of the game as a whole it remains consistent with its graphic nature that involves also gunning down cops and nonsensical use of wanton violence.

Looking back at posts that contain feminism or female subjugation, there is very little commentary on these topics. Anita was the target of rude attacks by the public during her debut of the video, however noted was the fact that this project was over funded and expensive given the resources provided. Also I don't believe that anyone thinks that Anita was really the target of an internet orgy that was going to 'rape' her and that the statements were a parody of the fact that her videos were going to feature feminist material in video games. When we actually discuss the bottom rung of society which involves girls performing sexual acts of pleasure to paid customers, the last thing we have on our mind is to attribute video games to this occupational gender bias. Even though we can allocate reasons as being societal, economic, and political we still fail to grasp the reality that the women themselves find themselves in the situation to perform because they have resigned themselves or find themselves unable to make money for a living without resorting to this type of lifestyle. When it comes down to making a decision to take on these dirty jobs, the decision to work them is a conscientious choice. The participants in this decision aren't thrust into it by unconsciously being influenced by pop music, teen drama tv, or video games but by the very real fact that they have run out of options and if they do not take on such a job, they will die.

The reality of real life comes down to living, how one can live their life more often than not remains the option than how one should live their life. What should be the focus of benefit programs and packages to equalize the playing field is to determine whether sufficient options are provided to women to get out of the hole. Women aren't restricted because they are sexualized, they are empowered by being offered the option to throw themselves into careers that cater themselves to questionable professions of lewd male service. In these situations what should be questioned aren't video games or media, but that the sense of egalitarianism isn't jeopardized for females who seek to climb higher on the social pole rather than simply dance around it.
