There are, of course, also some illegit ways to play GMS. Use a proxy, like AoL. I tried this several times, but somehow it doesn't work for me. It's somewhat complicated to use.
And then there is Hotspot Shield. The program I'm using at the moment. It's easy to download and use, and it doesn't make the game laggy or something.
For the server, I'd recommend a server which is not packed with players, but not death. So don't go to Renegades (dead), Scania, Windia and maybe Bera (packed).
Try Broa or Khaini and again, maybe Bera. Those are semi-packed but at the times you play, it's not busy at all! (assuming you play at the GMT +1 (?) times).
I'll try to go on Bera, Broa or Khaini. I don't really know if I should start playing it 50% EMS and 50% GMS or on a different scale since I'd like to have a guild and such~
