I actually enjoyed Tails with a mech 'cause it deviated from pseudo-sonic gameplay while developing what Tails is good at - engineering. If anything, he should be able to call his mech and use it for big fights and stuff.
If I want to play a game, I want to play that game. Not getting some weird gameplay shoved off my throat in the form of "variety". If I want variety, there's other games out there. A deviation is something like snowboarding off a street or the likes. And that's the problem with those games. Change of pace is full stages, and it ends with 1/3 of 3d sonic. Which has its own share of flaws in itself.
In Sonic Adventure 2, the one I played, basically all sonic stages go down to "Run forward, instanced gameplay, run forward, grind bar, stop a second, spam homing attack wreckelessly, repeat". Sure, it entertains, but it gets dull later on, when it could have been much better.
Treasure hunting was just "DIG EVERYWHERE", and mech stages were "hold button, spam joystick, release button", and when you get bored out of it, you start to try to exploit the glitches in the game like trying to glide to weird places with your mech, or skipping stage parts.
