Increasing commodity prices are definitely part of it. I'm inclined to think that at least some of the rise can be attributed to the "buy American" policy, though I'm not entirely sure how much. There was some much-needed consolidation in the banking sector that contributed to an increase in consumer and business confidence, which America seems to have greater-than-average levels of. I'm not entirely sure why, but people are always overly optimistic about small changes in the US. I think US stocks are somewhat inflated because of this.
