It's not that the AI is horrid so much as that the AI is too good for its own good.
If you noticed, a lot of the deaths would have been avoided by simple input from the player, such as a punch, or movement. The only two I saw problems with from that angle were Kirby and Fox. With Kirby, it's down-special doesn't check for the slope of the ground before using it. With Fox... I dunno. Maybe that late up-special?
The fact of the matter is that the AI is fueled by input from the player. Without input, it will still react as though there WAS input, and that leads to many, many deaths.
