Of the 6 I've tried to craft so far (1 S, 4 A, 1 B - was seeing how the different jewels odds are but I guess none are 100% success), 1 A rank worked, came out 5 str 3 atk. Chaosed it lower and dropped it.
I got Step Pop Coins from about 1/10 of the boxes in the bunny thief map, they mostly have jewel boxes and chaos scrolls (and I got 1 open-slot belt in 30 boxes).
The Dragons seem like the quickest way to get blanks, they come out of the bells fairly often and drop 1-2 blanks each, as well as untradeable 60% accessory stat scrolls and A-C rank jewels.
The one tradeable item in this mess is the Jewel Powder you get when a crafting fails (which most do). So I guess at least you can stack those up.
Observation of Synergy Machines is that like nebulites, you get the rank of the lower jewel most of the time, so C+C = C, B+B = B, A+A=A, etc.
