Nutritionists recommend eating five small meals a day because when your body is constantly processing something, it keeps your metabolism up and burning. When you're only eating two meals a day, it speeds up/slows down in waves, and is more readily storing energy as fat after a meal.
This is a common misconception. It doesn't stop physics, though. A calorie is a calorie in this circumstance. Your body doesn't care and burns fuel at a constant rate - not in waves.
The truth is that people who spread out their meals tend to weigh less, not that they burn more calories. There is a small but significant difference between "weighing less" and "weight loss".
