Some classes have unique gimmicks like the Wild Hunter, but when it comes down all the jobs are alike in one or more ways, imo at least.
It's still true today.
A Shadower is still uniquely a shadower despite being influenced by later decisions through changes of the game state. There have been other unique jobs so I'm unsure why you don't believe so. Despite being fundamentally decayed to a single core class (Thief, Pirate, Warrior, Archer, Magician) many of these new class branches have their own uniqueness to them like Angelic Buster for example. Most of the skills are inherently unique to the class itself and at the time no other class had them. Mechanic was unique as well in its own regard with the whole robotic scheme. Battle Mage was unique too because it was the first melee-like mage. So saying that there are no unique jobs is inconceivable at best.
