Another possibility: they could give certain skills bonus effects (or completely change how the skill works, and I'm not talking about skipping charge time here) if you chain them from another skill instead of using them on their own.

Or perhaps a "variable" skill that changes in effect depending on what skill it's chained from. But maybe that'll be too irritating to code...

My idea was mainly aimed at you, I remember you mentioned Arans sucked at vellum because they couldn't get enough "burst" damage
