Shana was a bummer. They had such a good fantasy premise that they proceeded to throw out the window. I know the point was the romance and the action/fantasy elements were merely flavor. That only makes me sadder. Rie Kugimiya's short tsundere characters are at the top of the pomegranate heap for me. Zero no Tsukaima is one of about 4 series I actually regret watching. Even worse than Shana. After those two, I couldn't even bring myself to try Toradora.
