At this point in the game, doing every single quest will get you to 50 shortly after you start the Lotus Marsh quests. It may depend slightly on how many capped chars you have (I did this with 1 level 50) and what difficulty you attempt (I do 1 Masters run for the achievements then Abyss only from there on) though.

Doing lotus marsh abyss on a geared level 40 is practically suicide and takes forever. Not worth the time and exp compared to master.

Doing lotus marsh abyss on a level 40 nowadays with the gear given to you is impossible.

This is based all on soloing as most people when they party want to get power-leveled. Roughly

75-85% of parties for lotus marsh are a power level party with a strong level 50
10-20% are parties that don't have a level 50 but are strong enough to do abyss, or maybe just master
5% or less are parties that go together to do quests

This also depends a lot on the class. As a pally he can solo stuff pretty easily without dying, it'll just take a while. If you play a new sorceress, unless you invest a lot of money into low level gear, you have to do hard mode, maybe master, just to pass lotus marsh dungeons.
