While the dictionary is a good start it is not nearly enough. The term feminism itself is steeped in so many meanings and values that it is on its way to become toothless and perhaps unusable for the purpose it orignialy held. Every time the term is used a clarification is needed to show what kind of feminism you are addressing.
The main problem is that a good many self proclaimed feminists seems to be confused about the goal or path to get there. They turn men, as great big ugly whole, into the enemy. So many feminist do this that it has infested the whole term itself, so of course the uninitiated have issues even relating to feminism. It is not just the vocal extremist miniority as seen in the media either, the foremost gender researchers in the academic world tend to fall for this too.
The definition as stated by nikki most of us would gladly call ourselves supporters of, but feminism today holds more than that, and it is important to be aware of the pitfalls.
