You need to collect the etc drops in the evolving world to unlock more slots.
You also need to collect an etc drop to unlock map 9 which is the best place to train at.
Essentially the first few times is just you whacking inside collecting the drops then after obtaining those items you can unlock the good areas to train at. While you train you can also collect the drops, so it kinda builds up I guess~
