Whole new PC. Old computer is too slow (it cant even run Office 2013 without lagging and crashing)

Really not sure what to get, I really want a self built PC but I also extremely worried that I might break something.
How do you intend to use this new part or new computer? What's the heaviest load it's likely to encounter?
Gaming, some video production and some server hosting.
