I do find that Maple has gone the path of more-alike classes -> easier to balance.
It's something you see other places, like the transition between Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 to 4th edition. Not to start an edition war, but 3.5 was horribly balanced and 4th edition is very well balanced. Why do people still play 3.5/Pathfinder? Because in balancing all the classes, they also made them feel the same. Mechanically, each class works differently and there's actually quite a bit of diversity, but to a lot of people they feel the same, which is often as important or more than mechanically being different. Which is why, even though 4th edition on paper is a better game than 3.5, it's not unreasonable for people to still prefer the previous.
That's one of the problems with Maple nowadays. Many people don't like that classes have sort of converged as they introduced new skills. I can say that I don't like training my Gunslinger as much anymore. I found it surprisingly fun to press two buttons to attack instead of one. Classes now are generally more balanced (At least older classes are among each other), but they also feel like they play more the same.
