There is no "average labor charge." Like I said, it depends on the mason and the project. Just tell him to charge what he feels is proper, then if you have a problem with it, just haggle him down. Not like he's going to turn down a job if you say "Sorry, I don't know any average labor charge."


But, if you want a random labor charge, I was charged $40 labor to get my car's odometer replaced, with the cost of the item being $130 as well as an oil change which run like $15 at a lot of places. So, the labor charge itself was like around 25-30% of the parts cost for 3 hours of labor.

If this guy is just doing basic work like laying down mortar, stacking, and leveling with no special requests like "leave an opening here with x dimensions" then go around 15% of the project cost @ x number of hours. If x=3 hours then if he works for 6 hours, pay him 30% of project cost. etc. If the size of this wall is around 4'h x 7'w x 6"d then I'd say that's about a few hours of work, assuming he's not a failure with mixing and applying mortar.
