I just beat the game for the first time, and I was super unsatisfied because I thought the bad ending was the only ending. How do I get the good ending?

after trading in the item you get from the miner, the monster hunter or the hermit for the item you desire the most, talk to the gift shop owner again, he'll ask you if you want to give it back. talk to him again, you give the item back, then you climb the ladder for the good ending.
