I'm proud of your actions. It takes some guts to quit, and your story is quite interesting as well..
I've asked myself the same question several times until I came to one conclusion:
Maple's more of a hobby for me. Although I've played for a long time, there's always something that interests me in-game, and when I feel like exploring those interests or talking to my friends, I log on. If I get angry or bored with the game, I simply abandon it for as long as it's needed. For example, currently, I haven't logged on in a week and 2 days, and I'll probably come back when Root Abyss is out. So far, I've reached the max level, and I might try to polish up my main for improved performance if I get some extra time. But at the moment, I'm not really engaging in heavy game play. It's mostly guild activities, or LHC sessions.
I started the game because I found it interesting. I've lasted so long not only because of my friends, but because of my personal enjoyment for the game. It's not so much that I need to quit; maybe my self-control for things like Maple has evolved for the better so that I don't need to be quitting. I still get my studies done, go to work, clean the house, and even other things.
I mean, again, I see this game more as a hobby for me. The same way an avid artist invests in an expensive tablet, or a runner buys running shoes to strengthen his performance; Maple applies, even if it's a game. If you're like me, you're essentially putting effort into something you enjoy. Who cares how amazing another games' graphics/gameplay? There's no such thing as a superior game or even a hobby per say if you are enjoying what you're doing. And everyone takes a lot of crap for standing up for things they like or have to quit, and taking that crap is only a way to strengthen you, which is why I found your story so interesting.
MapleStory is truly what you make of it. If you want to procrastinate on an assignment/project because you'd rather be bossing, then you are the one to blame, not the game. Most of us have started MapleStory on a bumpy road, and I'm sure a lot of you went through some crap with your parents and getting your work done because you were busy playing Maple. It doesn't mean you have to quit, it just means you need to have self-control. But again, the case is different for everyone.
I mean, you did what you have to do. And that's a good thing that you recognized the game for whatever it needed to be recognized for. Whatever the case, congrats on helping yourself.
Again, MapleStory is what you make of it. An addiction, an interest/hobby, an obstacle..? You decide.
