If you're going to do that, I think it's best to promote a day before the event starts.

On the day it starts.
No need to do it early, people can still get a chair easily even if they start a week or two late.
And people can't read, no matter how much you smega "it starts tomorrow" they will go on the site and come back with "it won't let me do the event!"

Probably the same sort of people who are registering like crazy despite the big red warning text informing them they don't need to.

Might try changing that text to just a big red bold DON'T REGISTER and then the rest of it in normal text. As it is it's too long and people skip it.

Either that or they read it and don't believe it, in which case there's nothing we can do.
