Apple believes it can make more money by using proprietary formats. From the very beginning, their message was, "You don't need to buy anything from anyone else, we offer a complete line of products guaranteed to work together smoothly."
Other companies believe they can make more money by allowing interoperability, and using "standard" formats.
It's all capitalism. Business. Looking for money, for profit.
