It's a trap made by Arkarium to deceive everyone who tries to go to the Gate of the Future, nothing actually happened to the Cygnus Knights and a positive effect of the trap is that it inspired Cygnus to form the Alliance after catching wind of what her future self did.

As the area and its effects looks real enough I don't think Cygnus is going to have the same fate again.
