It's okay since it's the first time it happens to you. Next time, always check subtily through a nearby window to see who it is before opening the door. That trick can be way more useful if you have a half see-through main door. If the person sees you and you walk away, he will continue to bother you until you open. Also, tell your mom to leave you messages or let you know if anyone is expected to ring the door bell. You will be aware of it.
If you accidently happen to open, just politely say that you are not interested, but thank for the offer anyways. It is pretty much of a key moment to know if the person is a good or bad one. If good, he will thank you and leave. If he's literally forcing you to listen or is holding the door from your to close it, watch out.
