I have a fair amount of experience playing as every class in the game (blame us having 40 cap for 10 months), and I'd recommend one of the below classes for a beginner (out of a total of 10):
Priest: Cleric subclass. Low damage in the earlier stages, but can easily wipe out mobs with massive AoE later on. His buffs are welcomed in any party, and heals are quite powerful now. Since he's a Cleric subclass, he actually has some of the highest HP of every class in the game, but has almost no mobility and long casting animations/low superarmor.
Engineer: Tinkerer subclass. Current highest physical DPS in the game. They can summon robotic allies to overwhelm enemies, and fight at range with their cannon skills. They are glass cannons, but they have skills that allow them to move faster or quickly escape a hairy situation. Note that if you choose to play as an Engineer, her story will assume that you've already played as a Cleric, Archer, Warrior, or Sorceress up to at least Level 40 beforehand. If the story is something you care about, the Engineer probably isn't the beginner class for you.
Elementalist: Sorceress subclass. Current highest magical DPS in the game. They focus on fire skills for DPS and ice skills for mob control. Note that the freeze status effect increases the amount of damage the target takes while frozen, and works on almost everything in the game, including major bosses. They are about as much of a glass cannon as Engineers are, but their skills are designed for close range combat.
Mercenary: Warrior subclass. Has a great mix of mobility, physical damage, and support. Many of his attacks can easily interrupt enemy attacks (or at least his attacks won't be interrupted). However, his skills have rather high cooldowns compared to most others. That's really the only thing I can come up with as a downside.
