Back then, higher level actually meant meaningful content. This was when expeditions took so long that the server needed to actually have a weekly schedule. This was when your level mattered more than your gear when it came to strength: your choice of what skills you maxed was pretty much your identity. This was when you needed to be rich to train, not because of your gear but because potions ate up 90% of the money you get from training unless you found something rare like a popular 60% weapon scroll.
Even though it took hours for a single level before 4th job, there was an actual benefit and incentive to grind: it meant you were one step closer to great content.
