It's been an on/off thing for the whole show. Which is a little unfair, since he is a rather emotional character who's attached to quite a few other characters and ideals. But his expression of all that is frequently flat and unconvincing. I suppose part of the point is that he's happy and having fun when he flexes his sword skills and they make sure to show that. He's just more fun to watch in that mode.
