I get that the Moon was something created by the Sage of Six Paths using Chibaku Tensei to seal the Ten Tails, what I don't quite get is why Madara would need it if Gedo Maso is the Ten Tail's body and he already got it out from the moon. It sounded to me like it has more importance than acting as a mirror to the eternal mangekyo, maybe I'm looking too deep into it.
As for Nagato's past, those hints you mention must come from around Jiraiya's fight with Pain, which I didn't really read. (It's in the whole between when I dropped the anime and picked up the manga).
