If you look at the status page, you can see that each channel crashed at the same second of the minute every time, with a specified interval of minutes in between crashes that is mostly constant.
I see no reason why a hacker would need to, or even be able to crash the server exactly 3 minutes apart from the previous crash. Not to mention the following.
If done for duping:
- They'd only need to take out one channel.
If done for griefing:
- They'd only need to wipe all channels in all worlds once and then just keep the login servers down.
Eos Wrote:The status page has no idea when they crashed. It only knows what the status was when it checked. I know at one point someone used your page to track the approximate times of previous crashes.
Too bad that was probably a one-time thing.

The status page checks on a schedule, and records the results, on that schedule.
The status page has no idea when they crashed. It only knows what the status was when it checked.
Speaking of which, is there any sort of external version of this thing?
I'd like to be able to mash f5 (or the standalone equivalent) and have it actually accomplish something other than wasting the site's bandwidth. :p

It's not saved, I traded my mule, all items went back to me again

Ah, but it's much more fun for the griefers to let people log in and then crash them again.
I don't know why they would keep one or two channels up. Might be cooperating with dupers, might be to cause people to try and catch the right channel, causing further frustration when it fails.

Granted, this comes from my understanding of DDoS attacks relying on a massive network of computers that needs to scale properly against whatever its attacking.
As you said, Maplestory is designed to accommodate thousands of active users.
I haven't kept track too carefully of MS traffic but it's only about 10KB/s peaks normally, which means thousands of people don't need much total bandwidth.
Anyway a DDoS would usually attack specifically some weak point, instead of just generating a lot of traffic to slow down the connection. Eg. running a bunch of login attempts, cause that requires loading up character data, or whatever.
On the other hand if unwanted traffic's only coming from a few IPs, Nexon can just block them. Though, granted, the amount of whisper DC spam they accept, it's possible they don't know how.

See, this would require you to know anything about how the internet works, not specifically about hacking.
There's a massive difference between D/Cing someone and a DDoS attack.
You obviously know nothing about either one.

I think I may have misunderstood that post, I thought you were talking about Anonymous DDoSing Nexon, when you were talking about the unnamed site that (may or may not have) carried out these attacks (okay, it's the second one).
Yeah, DDoS attacks rely on huge amounts of computers, sometimes individuals or sometimes a botnet. It took thousands of people to take down the RIAA, MPAA, DoJ, and assorted other sites for a short amount of time.
Anyone who thinks this is a DDoS is hilariously optimistic about Nexon's ability to recover from things. It's not just pushing the restart button on the servers and getting out of fetal position.

Yes, that's because both your mule AND your other character were on the same channel.
The way duping works is that your inventory is only saved when you close your store.
You buy the items on an alternate character, and then change channels or log off to "save their Inventory"
Since the game crashes while you're in a store, it loads the last saved copy of your inventory.
The person who cced saved their inventory, the items still exist in their inventory as well.

pretty sure if you CC and get RB'd, you can still lose the items if that channel crashes.

Wouldn't attacking a particular weak point only take down that particular weak point though?
For example, login attempts should affect the actual game channels.

Speaking of which, even in the attacks you listed, they weren't able to keep the sites down nearly as long as Maple has been down today.

Just an example, and yeah, more people means harder to sustain the effort, unless botnets get involved.

Was thinking more a downloadable thing, so we can check as often as we want instead of waiting on the schedule.

well yea, in these cases where everything gets crashed at the same time, changing channels won't keep your items safe.
now i have to wait for nexon to stop this crapfest before being able to take my cape out of the storage, sigh.
@above: can be done, but eos won't make it because something like that takes too much site bandwidth

That would mean less money for Eos then.
Also, since it pings all the channels, it could be used very easily to actually DDoS the game (instead of whatever bullshit is being spouted about hackers DDoSing the game without a botnet and with a maximum of about 100 DDoSers)

I know at least Zenith 11 did as well, got booted just as Pink Zak was starting.
Also, as I was typing this, 17 went down. >_>
