Honestly as long as Nexon made you pay for the fob it really shouldn't be much of an issue for them to do. Goodness knows they put off enough to the players as is.

Authenticator, you need the number on that thing to log in and that specific number is valid on a fixed time interval.

The thing is, thousands of people would BUY one of those. They would purchase account security. That's a pretty valid business strategy, if you ask me; it's a tiny piece of plastic, it probably costs like 40-50 cents to make, they could sell it at 10-15 dollars a pop and EVERYONE would flock to buy one. I sure as hell would. Even if you didn't want to buy it, the hackers would stop with the "steal the account" mindset since the majority of the accounts would have an authenticator after a few months, so even the people WITHOUT one would technically be safer from being hacked (unless, for some reason *cough*moremoney*cough*, nexon made a ticker showing whether or not an account had an authenticator).

Nexon would still have to pay for the infrastructure to support the authenticators, either licensing them from RSA or similar, since something on their end has to also be generating the numbers to match. And modify their clients and websites to optionally have/use them where applicable.

All of those are one-time costs (besides the licensing) and it isn't like they are groundbreaking technology, so it wouldn't cost a huge premium like it would have 10 years ago.

It's not even them, a good portion of us have requested for an "Authenticator" type of security for Nexon games. Hell, even I suggested this a while ago as well.

No but it is them that essentially repeats over and over again "Blizzard did it so nexon should too" which is my point. Yes the authenticator would be a great improvement but as others have stated, it's a burden nexon doesn't need. Their entire business is just refreshing new players.

Too complex for them. Even if they could probably earn TONS of money from that, they won't probably do it because they'd need to make many (well, in some cases) changes to the game client / website / servers for it. And, truth is, seeing the level of incompetence they have shown in the past, I doubt anyone there would be able to do it. They'd have to hire a special staff to implement it in their systems and possibly teach them how the client works too, because that'd need some interaction with it and the servers as well (unless they would be able to implement it themselves, which I doubt). This would also require money, along with that for the infrastructure itself.

Why doing all that when the players keep buying NX and they earn more and more money every quarter?

People should keep protesting on Nexon Forums or doing something to get noticed until they finally admit there's an issue on their end and investigate the origin of it more thoroughly (even though I can understand that, if the hackers are experienced enough, it might NOT be so simple).

With all the Nexon's security f'ups, I wouldn't be surprised if people still get hacked WITH the authenticator. Those things would only work if they were implemented correctly, something I think is beyond Nexon's capability.

The purpose is also to prove your identity, but I agree, it wouldn't surprise me if blackmarkets started selling them to eachother lol

You don't think they would have bulk deals for that kind of thing, like business' get with software license packages? I haven't worked much with that kind of thing yet, so I don't know.

All the authenticator really does is set up a second password that you never enter directly (thus avoiding keyloggers and such). If they can break into the DB storing your regular PW, they can get the authenticator PW too. It has to be stored on Nexon's end so they can check the authenticator input is right, so if Nexon's the problem...

One of my friend's got hacked on the 3rd apparently. I had just talked him into coming back to play, since world transfers were back, and he was fine with that, but upon logging in found all of his gear and mesos stripped from his characters. There was no password reset, no password reset request on his email, absolutely no sign of forced entry into his account whatsoever. He hadn't even logged in for the past 5? 6? months. He also had 30k NX siphoned from his account via mts - a single arrow for bows.

I feel like punching someone. He's sent a ticket, no reply from Nexon yet. Not that I expect those worthless sacks of pomegranate to DO anything about it. Sad how these players can spend hundreds, thousands of dollars on this game, and Nexon just gives them the middle finger for it when something happens that's entirely NEXON'S fault.

I'm actually surprised I haven't been hit yet. I've already split my funds across different newly created accounts anyway, if there were a database leak, new accounts should be fairly safer.
