The premise of this is pretty simple. You tell me a genre or a band you like and I provide you similar options! I'm not saying everything I post you're gonna like, but I like to consider myself a person with some taste in music, and I like everything! From touhou music to 60s folk music so... make your guess.
I'm doing this because there are lots of bands out there needing to be listened a lot more, and it seems like an interesting idea. Plus, if anyone feels like it, you can barge in and recommend too! The idea of this is to recommend music to each other and broaden our musical tastes. Everyone likes that, no?
A few rules first, sadly:
- No direct download links. There's a warez rule.
- If you're gonna link to a YouTube video, or embed it, please do it in spoilers with a title! (
title
[./spoiler]) It doesn't clog the page and it's better for everyone to read.
- Try to elaborate a bit on the band or artist you're recommending, it helps a lot and makes the interested person more prone to listening what they've been recommended.
- Links to Wikipedia are always welcome!
Let's see what comes out of this!
---------------------------------
I'll start recommending a new favorite of mine as of late:
Pretty Lights
Pretty Lights is a producer from the US. He makes a trippy Hip-hop/Dubstep mix, with a bit of old jazzy and funky samples. It's a good listen, plus the albums are free!

Testing me, huh? Sadly, I just know about one enka artist, though I've listened to a couple traditional Japanese music albums mixed with more contemporary music.
The only artist that comes into my mind, and Wikipedia reminded me of, is Keiko Fuji, and she's one of the most famous ones. I would link you to some YouTube videos, but YT is blocked at work by proxy.
I've read about some more contemporary music mixed with enka and seems interesting. A black guy doing enka sounds like a strange mix, I should give that a listen. I can say that enka is pretty okay since it's featured in a bunch of old Japanese films I've seen, and some Kurosawa's movies I remember feature enka songs, though I don't recall which ones exactly, and I never cared enough to look up the OSTs.
Tough call, bro. Made me learn my s'hit, which is cool anyway.

By newest you mean this one? I haven't followed Dream Theater lately, and this record is almost fresh from the oven. Though kind of knowing what Dream Theater does, and I guess you like what they did with LTE, I could recommend you a thing or two.
Maybe you could tell me a bit more about what other bands you listen to, I should get a better overview after that. There's a good amount of metalheads in this forum too, and I know Fiel has a good amount of knowledge in metal bands.
Don't be shy if you read, if you know something another person could like, recommend away bros.
Edit: btw, I had no idea Portnoy had left the band, thanks for the heads up
Edit no.2: I'm guessing you like Symphony X, right?
Awesome prog metal band. Has interesting lyrics that deal with anything from cults to alien abductions. Their lead vocalist kind of sounds like Chris Cornell.
Why thank you metalmike. Both those bands were awesome. And again to rob I also like alt rock/metal like staind, stone sour, bush and also older linkin park. I also like some more lighter things like RHCP.

Lovely. Digging this recommendation. I usually pick up a bit of enka from movies/really old anime soundtracks and yes, I know what you mean about contemporary music mixed with enka. Would something like this work?

Oh, so you're into other stuff too. Cool. Then I can present you some other bands.
These guys are the s'hit. They do rock ranging from a progressive metal-ish sound to more mellow or psychedelic sound. The band has records that focus on particular genres and it's all pretty diverse.
Moonlapse is a bro and recommended you good stuff, didn't know about it too. Thanks man.

Yeah, I admit it was sort of a way to test how you go about listening to all your music, but you impressed. Thanks!
This reminds me of the enka song featured in Kill Bill that I thought was overkill, and never bothered to look it up.
As for the mixes, that was surprisingly good, even better than what I was expecting, but I was thinking of something like this: I can't for the life of me find the song I was looking for. Maybe I'll edit later.
Oh dear god rob. I loves you forevers now. Blackest eyes is like , the definition of what I like in music rolled into one song. Also symphony x is amazing. You are now best bro.

No prob man, I'm glad the thread's serving its purpose. Check the newest Porcupine Tree stuff then, from In Absentia onwards, it's in the vein of Blackest Eyes!

And no idea if this suits you, or if you already listen to them, but they showed up just when I was looking for that Asking... video, pretty cool stuff, I ended up listening to them for half an hour just now:
