Gamasutra Wrote:[Image: nexon.jpg]Seoul-based online game publisher Nexon is heading for an initial public offering on the Tokyo Stock Exchange next month, according to media reports. Japanese business newspaper Nikkei, as translated by TechCrunch, is reporting that the company is aiming to raise ¥100 billion ($1.3 billion) in total as part of the IPO. This would make Nexon's IPO the biggest that Japan has seen this year. Companies that will reportedly manage the offering include Nomura Securities, Morgan ...

Wow. I am going to try and get in on this (even though fidelity is funny about letting me buy IPOs). For as many flaws as Nexon has they have someone throwing money at them for thoose virtual goods. Also I imagine that thier facebook games are generating some decent profits.

Saw the truncated title on the index "Report: Nexon To File $1.3B...", expected "lawsuit" to be the next word.

If I could get into stock trading, I'd so be doing the same. Business-wise, they're gaining profit, so of course you wanna get in on those gains.

Smart of them, but I don't think I would want to take part in it. I see their profits as precipice gains; no matter how high they go it's always going to be an extremely unsafe stock to own, in my eyes.

Although, question, would owning a portion of their stock give a person rights as a shareholder when it comes to their player account? As in, would they be forced to actually LISTEN to us? If that were the case...

Not really, no.
If you owned a significantly large portion, perhaps, or if you brought a class action suit forward as a stockholder claiming that their poor business practices were damaging the value of the stock and needed to be addressed, possibly.

Neither would be easy. If you had that kind of money and clout you could probably already have options.

Does owning stock in Ford give you any special rights regarding your car (assuming it is a Ford)?

You could come to shareholder meetings and vote your share. Suppose you bought $1K of those $1.3B, you'll have just about, let me see... approximately... no say whatsoever in what the company does.

Nexon being publicly traded does help us in that they have to be far more open about what they're doing and planning to do. Unfortunately, this is Nexon Korea. We know they do invest quite a bit back in the product(s). I wish Nexon America would go public, then they'd have to stop with their gold bathtubs or w/e the hell they're doing with their profits instead of hiring people to improve the customer experience.

Pretty sure it's all being absorbed into the parent as licensing fees and upkeep costs.

from wikipedia:

Quote:There are several benefits to being a public company, namely:
  • Bolstering and diversifying equity base
  • Enabling cheaper access to capital
  • Exposure, prestige and public image
  • Attracting and retaining better management and employees through liquid equity participation
  • Facilitating acquisitions
  • Creating multiple financing opportunities: equity, convertible debt, cheaper bank loans, etc.
  • Increased liquidity for equity holder

How many of those apply to nexon? F3

If you mean, "Why are they doing this?", the answer is simple: they want/need $1-1.5B, and consider selling off some small part of ownership of the company as the best way to obtain this cash.

Didn't think so, was just checking. I don't know many of the deeper semantics of the stock market, I'm just forced to listen to it on the radio and the television all hours of the day. Yes, both, my dad has the radio on and the TV on at the same time, with a pair of headphones on his laptop sometimes as well. I don't see how he gets anything out of it, honestly...

It could lead the way to some radical changes in their operations though, as true large share holders get involved and other companies start buying portions of their stock and exerting pressure. That will likely take years to occur though.

I would think about buying shares based on the fact that I know Nexon will keep growing and profiting but at the same time I would feel disgusted knowing why my shares are worth so much.

If you were to invest in this you would, without a doubt, make a killing though.
