What Do You Guys Work As?

I work at Sears lol. I just started a few weeks ago but I'm pretty much owning all of my coworkers, few of which are in their late 20's while I'm still 18. I pretty much run the electronics department, sell more TVs than everyone, sign morons up for Sears credit, and then steal more of their money by signing them up for protection agreements on our various electronics.

It's working out for now, but they won't give me full-time hours. It is also a commission-based job so I never really know how much I'm going to be making, unless it's November or December where I am pretty much garaunteed to sell TVs. So I may need to look into a secondary job or maybe just a new job altogether.

For most TVs, only 1%. Some nicer ones give up to 5%. Salesmen here make all of their money by offering customers protection agreements (Sears' warranty), which we make 10% off of. Protection agreements are priced based on the cost of the product, and for many TVs the PAs are over $500.

On top of the commission from both the TVs and the PAs, we earn spiffs. Basically, certain manufacturers reward us for selling their TV by giving us a set amount of monies. We have two TVs that have $50 spiffs, and one TV with a $100 spiff.

So, to put things in perspective, if I sold a $2300 plasma with a $600 protection agreement, and also got a $50 spiff for selling the TV, then I've pretty much landed $133 in my pocket out of one sale, on top of the $6/hr base pay. This isn't necessarily a rare sale, either, but I've only made this kind of money in one sale two times in the four weeks I've been working. So it's not bad. Work has been really slow lately. November and Decemeber are the two big money-making months in electronics, though.

You have such a narrow view. Life IS about doing what you love. You end up being totally miserable by the time you're old because you look back and realize you haven't done anything that actually fulfilled you. You can have a huge house, smexy cars, the hottest wife and you can still be miserable with it.

To be fair, the world (as it currently runs anyway) need people who are motivated by money and don't care about doing what they love in order to get money. We can't all do what we want otherwise who would do the crap jobs? That's right, people who are willing to do them for money even if it makes them miserable.

No it's still worthless. Do something good, I'm still not convinced. Life isn't about what you love, it's about getting married, having 2 kids, owning a house and 2 cars, and look at rich people with envy. And you could be one of the better off rich people.

You're making me derail this thread it just doesn't make sense to me. Do something else in medicine besides pathogens then. Journalism and fashion, god. Those majors are the people who end up giving you change at tolls or some other bullshit job. Omfg.

I honestly don't see why you care so much. It's his life, not yours...his passions not yours. If the man wants to work in the fashion industry (and not even that, he wants to, to my understanding of what he posted, work in the fashion CRITIQUING industry), then all the power to him. As a music major, I understand doing what you love, and I understand the brutal future that potentially awaits me out there, but I'm from the opinion that if you don't love what you do, then you won't do it as well as someone who does. And if you don't do what you love, you'll just spend the rest of your life wondering what if, or regretting the choice. I actually think BECAUSE of his microbiology background that he can afford to do this, because if it doesnt work out, he still has the flexibility to do something that'll pay the bills while doing something he loves in his extra time.

That's bullcrap, I'm sorry. I worked answering calls doing tech support for hours and that's a s'hitty job, but I tried to enjoy myself at work for the money I had and being myself and trying to accomplish my dreams and what I really want to do on my spare time. If you are miserable with your job, look for another one.

You CAN love money and dream about being ultra millionaire, though, and that's respectable. What bothers me the most is ''flatness'' and the lack of desire or motivation to accomplish something you WANT and just settling down for less.

To everyone at OB3LISK: calm down, ya'll. He's a friend of mine. What he really means by all of his posts at me is not to sit here and berate or flame me, but just verbally enunciate his own shock at finding out that's my life plan, which is so different from what he recognizes as "the norm." While I appreciate the defense, and have enjoyed reading your person takes on various life philosophies, no worries; we're all free-thinking individuals here who can make our own decisions, and I'm not about to give up my life plan because he thinks it's pointless.

Oh, good thing you posted that, because I was about to post a long rant.

I'm in my first year of med school. Before that I did a degree in science, with an emphasis on Genetics. While doing so I worked for a utilities company doing a significant amount of their customer grounding as well as the grounding for their transformer stations and DC converter stations.

If I had my way, I would be standing on a podium with a baton in my hands.

I am a Laboratory Analyst for ALCOA. We are a global aluminum company with one big refinery in the entire United States: Point Comfort, Texas. We get samples from various departments every four hours, and they need things like percent solids, grams per liter solids, total alkalinity, total caustic, and percent aluminum. We also do other things like melt alumina down with flux to make glass beads to run in an X-Ray Spectrometer. One of my big jobs every week is to run ten grams of our finished product under our Scanning Electron Microscope to make sure there aren't any major deformities or impurities.

It doesn't pay as much as I think it should, but compared to other jobs and being unemployed, it is amazing. I wouldn't trade it for anything short of something that was actually in my major field of study.

As far as school goes, I'm currently double majoring in Economics and Business with a minor in accounting at UCLA.

Engineers in a production company are hired based off their program efficiency in CAD based programs, and not so much their understanding of all things engineering, from what I've seen, at least.

So far, that is what I've seen, but it depends on the position. The job I have right now requires no knowledge of engineering applications, just knowledge of CAD, Excel, and some 3D modeling program. That doesn't mean I don't know my sh'it, but I don't apply it in my everyday work. However, I've heard from other co-ops that some companies may require you to show some level of engineering knowledge before hiring you. For example, one company required students to assemble a circuit on the spot (lol f'uck that) as part of the interviewing process. It's very situational, but most of the time, you just need to demonstrate you know engineering principles to get your job. Unless you're going into R&D, you're not really going to have to know whether a reheat cycle in a steam power plant will yield better results in relation to cost.

tl;dr: Most engineering jobs don't expect you to apply engineering principles from school.

right now i'm a delivery driver for pizza hut, which is probably the easiest job i've ever had. i make $6.15 an hour, but i get $1.50 each time i go on a run ($12~ a night roughly from that), and tips help a lot. this is only part time while i go to a junior college in town for my basics. next semester i'll be going to University of North Texas for and dual majoring in Design and Communication.

It's only $7.25 in the U.S.

The only reason he get's away with $6.15 is his incentive brings over that. If he were still making below that at the end of the day his store would have to make up the difference, legally, just like restaurants are obligated to with tips.
