MapleStory is easy to learn, but once you learn the basic game mechanics, where do you go and what do you do? Read on to find out!

Playing a Warrior -- Post Ascension!

In two previous editions of AcornStory, we discussed choosing an Explorer or choosing a Cygnus Knight, including what to expect when playing as a Dawn Warrior. Later, we had an in-depth discussion about the advanced Explorer Warrior classes. Even in Maple World, though, time doesnt stand still. Ascension is almost here and things are about to change again. In this AcornStory, well discuss whats happening with all four Warrior classes.

Warriors of any type, whether theyre one of the three Explorer sub-types or the Cygnus Knight Dawn Warrior, are in many ways the physically toughest class. They will usually be found at the front of the party taking damage and bringing their powerful weapons to bear against monsters in one-on-one combat. Warriors are also able to use much of the weaponry in the game and many of them are able to specialize and get really powerful with certain kinds of weapons. This remains true in post-Ascension MapleStory.

Regardless of what type of Warrior you play, youll find yourself doing more damage at every level. Firstly, some older skills have been replaced with new skills. Originally, these older skills had been created with secondary effects that were supposed to offset the decreased damage. As the game evolved, these secondary effects became less effective. The development team found that removing the skill and adding extra damage to another skill made the class more fun to play without compromising the essential nature of the class.

While it wont affect the way the class plays, Ascension also brings a fun update to the Warriors graphic effects. Many Warrior skills were originally designed to use the same graphic effects regardless of the weapon being used. This has now been changed and the graphic effects will be slightly different for each weapon.

As a character kills monsters, they acquire "experience points." When they attain a certain number of experience points, they'll rise in level. For each level they attain, they'll receive a certain number of Skill Points and Ability Points that they can use to acquire new skills and powers to fight monsters and improve their basic abilities.

Skill Points (All Warriors)

Skill Points are used to learn new powers or to increase the power of an already learned skill. Many MapleStory fans have taken it upon themselves to write detailed guides with recommendations for various Warrior "builds," or lists of skills they believe make for an ideal Warrior, along with how many Skill Points should be put into each ability.

With the changes in available skills, what constitutes an optimal build for a Warrior will also change. If youd like to get involved in the discussion or talk about recommended builds, you can get started on the official MapleStory Forums.

This guide won't recommend a specific build, but will point out a few of the new and improved Warrior skills.

Note: Certain skills will not be available until you reach a certain level.

Basic Warrior Skills (All Warriors)

Ability Points: Ability Points are used to increase a character's basic abilities to perform skills and other actions. For example, "Strength" (abbreviated STR) affects the amount of damage a character inflicts when striking a monster. The most important abilities for a particular class are sometimes referred to as their "primary attributes."

Primary Attributes (All Warriors)

Strength (STR): Strength is by far the Warrior's most important ability. The higher your STR, the more damage you'll do when hitting a monster with a handheld (melee) weapon. Some weapons require a certain amount of STR before you can use them.

Dexterity (DEX): Dexterity improves your accuracy and helps you avoid getting hit.

Pro Tip: The distribution of Ability Points is very important for a Warrior. Some players recommend pumping most of your Ability Points into STR while putting nothing into DEX. Others believe in a more balanced approach. It's recommended you seek out the advice of fellow players when building your Warrior.

Job Advancement

Once an Explorer Warrior character reaches level 30, they have the opportunity to begin to specialize in their chosen class. This is called a "job advancement." For Explorer Warriors, that means they can choose to follow the path of the Fighter, t

I'm also irked by them continually mentioning 'specialization' as if there's any real choice when it comes to builds.

pretty sure they meant specialization as in "pick a weapon/job to specialize in" spears/pole, blunt/sword, or axe/sword
