I am willing to believe that Crawls with Balrog is indeed Dances with Balrog. We have no idea how aging happens in the maple world so it is fully possible for Balrog to be a couple of hundreds years old. I am pretty sure those 4th job guys are pretty old and who knows about the 3rd job guys.

Actually, I don't even think he died that long ago. Lady Syl looks to be in her mid-to-late 20's or early 30's. Given that the two were very in love (iirc), that puts it more in the range of 5-10 years. Maybe a year or two before MS started, because he seems to be well in power, and the other instructors know him.

The most powerful army in the world hasn't been turned evil in the present (admittedly that is in the future).
The Black Mage isn't free and in power in the present.
I assume that the forces of evil that exist in the present still exist in the past and future (zak, HT, Pianus, Balrog, etc). We actually have it easy right now, PB and Von Leon are the only two large threats.

The keeper of the temple of time says something like the fabric of time will unravel or something in the quests.

Well I can think of a way they could do it very easily, but it involves one of the Shrooms dying.

Step 1: Have a Shroom jump into Dark Lord's mouth as he's eating (so the face mask is removed).
Step 2: Wait for Dark Lord to be fully stoned by the Shroom's intoxicating spores.
Step 3: Rob the comatose Dark Lord for everything he's worth.

Well I can think of a way they could do it very easily, but it involves one of the Shrooms dying.

Not quite. The closest thing he says is, "This doesn't simply concern the Temple of Time but it can affect the entire Maple World and its people. Don't just brush it off that easily."
