Setting up a new desktop to the internet wirelessly?
#1
My mom recently got herself a desktop for her room, and so we've been trying to get it connected to the internet, but I can't seem to figure out how.

We have a desktop (this one) that's obviously connected to the internet, through a router, but with this new desktop on the other side of the house, a cable is impractical. So anyways, is there a way to get it connected to this router/computer and the internet without having to buy any special adapters?

Both desktops are running on Windows XP, and the router is by Netgear, if that makes any difference.
I'm clearly not too great with computers, so some simple explanations would be highly appreciated.
Thanks!

You can't connect wirelessly if the desktop does not have a wireless card built into it. The wireless card allows it to detect the network that is being transmitted by your router. Do you know if there's one installed?

I don't think a card is installed

The only way then is to get a really long ethernet cable and wire it through your home. But with it being a desktop buying and installing a wireless card wouldn't be so bad.

Are there any specific cards you would recommend or would any do?
Also, is it fairly straightforward to get it connected from there?

Go to bestbuy ask, and unless your experienced with cards then get them to install it.

I know you said you didn't want to have to buy anything, but with the situation you've presented it looks like buying an adapter is your only option.

There are 2 predominant kinds of wireless cards you can get for your PC:

One of them is USB; the simple no-brainer approach. Just plug it in, hopefully windows will automatically detect the drivers, and if it doesn't then just use the CD supplied.

The other option is to get a PCI Wireless card, this is something that slots into a part of the motherboard on the inside of the computer. It might be a little confusing at first but there are plenty of guides online regarding how to install it(open case, place card in empty PCI slot[usually a white base]).

From personal experience I've always had better, more stable luck(for gaming) with PCI cards over USB. But with this being your mom, a USB would probably suffice.

Depending on where you look you could get either of the two for 10-50$, but you pay for what you get in most cases. The newer, more fancy adapters with all of the high-speed 802.11n technology will obviously cost a little more than an 802.11b/g adapter.
