Casual lunch or all-out dinner for a first date?
#1
Okay so I'll cut to the chase. I met this girl in one of my classes all the way back in the Fall of last year, she asked me for help with one of her assignments and me being the nicest person in the world agreed. After that, she gave me her number but I was too retarded to do anything with it and I lost touch with her over the Winter.

We randomly bumped into each other at the beginning of Spring quarter and she asked me to be her partner for a Game Design class.
Anyway, after about 2 1/2 months with her as my partner, I've decided that she's the sweetest, and probably most amazing girl I've ever met. She's so cute, too. (inb4baklava'soutofhisleague)

BUT I'M, Y'KNOW, RETARDED, SO THERE'S ONLY 2 WEEKS OF CLASS LEFT BEFORE WE ALL GO HOME.

Well anyway, I wanted to ask her out this coming weekend, which is our last weekend here, as sort of a 'last weekend fun time because I want to go out with you and I'm really going to miss you over the summer because I really like you' thing.

But I don't know what to ask her to. All my RL friends pretty much say to go for lunch because it's less intimidating and casual and still makes for a good time, which I totally understand, but I feel like it's too...I dunno, ordinary, especially if I'm not going to be seeing her for 3-4 months.
So lunch? Dinner? Something in between? Something not related to eating food?

...and how long in advance should I ask? I'm pretty much going to be seeing her every day to work on our game project, which is any time from Monday to Wednesday, before the finished project is due on Thursday...and I wanted to ask her for either Friday or Saturday.

I feel like I've wasted a lot of opportunities with her but I'm not going to let it get away anymore. :C

Ask her out towards the end of the project if you want to go for non-casual date type dinner. That way if she rejects you (not saying she will. you got this!), there won't be the awkwardness when you work together on your project that may or may not interfere with your grade.

But if you're in a hurry, ask for lunch. though it may not be the date type environment you want, it can be a better way to "take your minds off things (in this case the project and such. Who wants to talk about school on a date?)".

Casual lunch all the way. This way you split the bill.

I'd say a late lunch or early dinner. Best time of the day.
You should ask her as soon as possible. You said yourself that you feel like you wasted enough opportunities.
Remember, she gave you her number in the first place so she must like you at least enough for her to want you to call her.
Good luck. ^_^

That's one of the things that stopped me from asking her earlier, the awkwardness if she says no.
But yeah, I just want to treat her to a good time, cause she's usually so busy and whenever we've met up, she always seems tired and/or distracted by her other classes...

I really don't mind paying for her. :3

Well, I've attempted to ask her out for lunch like 2-3 times already but she was either too busy that day, or had practice at the same time. (She plays badminton)...so I wouldn't say I've missed opportunities, but more like, used them to no avail, I guess.
And well, she gave me her number 'cause she wanted my help for a programming class and she didn't know how to contact me besides phone. I wouldn't really say that she gave it because she liked me and just wanted me to call. >_<

Oops. Picked wrong choice. I guess that's what I get for voting instead of reading first.
But yea, this sounds more like a casual-lunch

Big dinner sets a precedent that you don't want. Didn't read any other posts but seriously, just go for lunch and a walk or something.

Casual lunch of course.
If you go all out on the first date she`l expect everything! Keep her on your level dont make her feel like shes doing you a favour, make it seem like your giving her a oppertunity.

Oh and good luck!

Yeah. Casual lunch is always preferable for a first date.

All-out dinner may make her feel like you're coming on too strong (especially on a first date), but casual lunches are always fine.

Nope, sorry, I've changed my mind after actually reading your post.

You need to make your intentions clear and lunch won't cut it at this point. Don't make it a fancy dinner but it needs to be clear it's a date. Don't go spilling your guts and talking about all of your feelings or anything like that, and don't treat her like she's a delicate flower or something untouchable. Just be cool, be yourself, but be clear. In case you're not getting it: clarity is key.

Dinner, though. Lunch dates work for people you've just met and are interested in. Lunch dates between friends are too common to allow you to figure anything out.

I think dinner is the right choice, if you're already good friends then casual lunch-type, or even dinner dates are too common and the idea of something more might not come across clear. I also agree with Sarah on many points. Don't make it extremely fancy, but clarity is definitely the key in this situation, especially since you're already friends.

Sarah's on the ball here. You've known her far too long for lunch to really be the way to go. If you want to tell her you like her in a way other than a friend, go with dinner. A relatively casual dinner would probably work, and try to make sure it's somewhere you know well enough. Keep your expressions of your feelings to match the setting, calm and not big, staying in that early phase of "like you" and letting her get the idea you're giving.

I know you changed your answer, but I'm curious, what exactly is the precedent that I don't want?

Of course. The most I'd probably say is like "I think you're a really sweet girl, and I like you" or something of the sort. Stop me if even that seems too far, though.

Anyway, I wanted to take her to this little sushi bar downtown, it's nothing fancy, the atmosphere is mostly laid back and friendly and the food is delicious.

Do you guys think it'd be a little too much to offer to pay for her as well? I don't mind it at all and I'd gladly pay for her, but, like some other people have said, it might seem like I'm coming on too strong at such an early point and I'm just like.

It's a precedent no one should want: that you're willing to go out and spend big amounts of money on her whenever you can. It also sets a romantic precedent that you can't keep up forever. If you keep it casual and fun, that's something you can keep doing.
