8.9 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Japan + Tsunami and Alerts
#21
5th strongest ever registered.

First one was Chile, 9.5.

I saw this and had to triple check the intensity. 8.9? Holy pineapple.

And the Tsunami's just insane. Plus it seems the wave will spread throughout a bunch of countries around the Pacific. Seriously, as a wanna-be geologist I'm awed and terrified.

Also, I heard something about a nuclear alert at Japan?

Yeah, they shut down 5 nuclear power plants to prevent additional disaster.

I saw this in evening news too, bad news indeed.

There's also a warning in Thailand about incoming tsunami from this earthquake. I was relieved when they later announced that tsunami will be only 20cm tall.

edit: news reporter said there are only 22 deaths (an hour ago). Very few for natural disaster like this.

I hope the Bandai factory didn't get hit. Don't want the MG Epyon to be delayed.

Yeah, most deaths are from the Tsunami (read 300 or so?).

I'm impressed though. Japan seems to be exceptionally prepared for this kind of thing, both in terms of their buildings and the psychology of the people. Just saw a video of some Japan office, pomegranate was shaking and the people were just chilling in there, standing still.

Had it been me...

/flashback at the ~4 pointer earthquake and the following few nights I couldn't sleep.

Now the country is on Nuclear Emergency... That sucks more than having your city destroyed... Poor guys...
And a lot of countries in South-America, on the pacific coast may get hit by a tsunami... Well, if I don't come online anymore you all know what happened. /:

I feel for the pacific islands, I've heard the waves are so high they'll cover some of the islands completely. I guess most victims will be found there. =\

Just saw some El Salvador footage.

It ain't Japan magnitude (obviously), but there's quite some flooding going on in there.

It should not have made landfall in the eastern Pacific coasts yet.

You should be able to find some more technical aspects on Wikipedia, assuming the page remains unvandalised.

"Reporter" sold it as if it was part of the tsunami.

But then I'm watching the whole thing from some... show program thing(?) giving this thing "special" coverage.
Local tv. Enough said.

There is this nuclear plant around some some town on the southeast of Japan which it's reactor cannot be cooled. They are evacuating everyone 3 Kms around this area. Just imagine what will happen if they cannot do something about it ..... T_T

This is the real aftershock D:

The world is absolutely fucked. Hopefully there won't be many deaths, but it doesn't look good.

I'm not "borked," but I'm extremely worried about all of my friends.

Sayaka is scared, too. She said she can't even get through to her grandmother in Yokohama due to destroyed phone lines.

This is very shocking. I offer my condolences to the people in Japan, and everyone else affected by this disaster.

This is what I thought. "Indonesia had a 7-something, right? and this is an 8.9? Poor country's going to be ripped to shreds" That was 9.1. Only 40% more energy was released.

How the country hasn't lost half of its citizens is beyond me. Someone up there must like Japan. A lot.
