Agreed. Actually, this game isn't fun. In my opinion, it's just addicting. The nonstop wanting of going to the next level, yearning to see higher damage, and more skills...it'll just drive anyone to addiction.

Personally, I've spent $25 on this game, but that was back when I was an immature idiot. I'm not planning to spend any more nx ever again unless I get it for free. In fact, right now I'm trying to prove that a dexless assassin can be unfunded and nxless but still reach a decent level. Even if the gap between the nxless and nxed is wide, so what? It's only time. I don't care that I have to spend twice as much time selling items. I don't care I have to spend twice as much time leveling. I don't care I have to make up the experience that I die in. In fact, the more time, the more enjoyable the experience (could be arguable). One day, I can proudly look at a nxed in the eye and proudly say I'm the same level.

And about the quests. Yes, they have hardly any reward. But people still complete them. Why? The reward doesn't freaking matter. As long as you have fun doing the quest, as Isaac and Felix have done (I think), it does not matter what the reward is. The storyline for the quests is sometimes epic, such as Ariant and Crimsonwood Keep. In fact, they serve the "break from training."

Despite its shortcomings, I still play this game after two years because it's inexpensive (it can be very expensive, but that's a choice people make) and simple. Certainly there are "better" games out there in many respects, but I happened to play this one. After two years, my highest character is only level 80, yet it's still fun.

Obviously the programming could be better, the customer service could be much better, and so on. If I had a big problem with any of those, I'd leave, and in fact I did leave for almost six months when the entire game was overrun with "hackers" so that playing seemed pointless. I understand that the game (at least in the North American market) is intentionally designed to extract money from teens, and it seems very successful in that respect. Knowing the nature of the beast, I can avoid its snares.

People who keep playing the game even though they don't like it... well, if you continue to do something even though you know it's bad, you don't like it any more, and yet you still can't stop, I think that's a sign of addiction. Seriously, if anyone's in that position they should seek help.

Why are you trying to flame me over something you think that I'm complaining, and contradicting myself about when you yourself are doing the same thing you're accusing me for? You're saying "if you hate this game, gtfo". You don't like these threads, you hate how people who whine and complain about this game but they continue to play it make whiney thread about it. And you say you quit basil and sp because of it. Yet you continue to view this thread and this forum.

I'm presenting an analysis of what modern Maplestory is. The players not only create what modern maplestory is, they reflect it. Maplestory on it's own is a culture almost. What makes a culture a culture? A culture has shared ideas, symbols, values. Maplestory has this. People are in guilds, they have interaction, they have friends, they do things together. And they have a shared a set of values and rules, and what is acceptable behavior and what isn't.

Do you read the newspaper? Magazine articles? Because people do that. They present to you "news" when it's not really news, it's just the same idea about the world around you.

This game is fun to me, especially now that I reached 4th job. The skills are amazing, the animation are cool and they interest me. The story is pretty good too, I can't wait to see what will happen with Magatia, Pirates and part II of Crimsonwood Keep.

I play with friends and usually talk while training, either with or without them. I'm never constantly watching my EXP to see how much EXP I can get in an hour. I've never bought NX Cash, nor do I want to. I see nothing good in it, nothing worth my money. I guess that might stress some people, because they have to make room in their schedule to take full advantage of their precious 2x EXP cards. I can play or stop anytime I want, without having to worry about wasting my money because I'm not training.

People need to see this game as a game, not a chore. That's something that's ruining games nowadays, everyone is thriving to be the best (not necessarily a bad thing). But they get too sucked into the game, that they stop having fun and start, I don't know, being zombies, reaching the top.

this sums it up. think it as fun. I set myself on a goal, train maybe one hour a day, and goof off the rest.

I split it up, and usually chat with my alliance.
Ive bought NX, just for pets. there too damn cool not to get. and since i lag alittle, they help alot.

I just go with the 10k every 3 months(when it expires)and get the practical stuff.

there is a fine, fine line between obsessed with leveling and NX, and having a casual game wher you spend alittle once in a blue moon

Why are you posting on a forum for a game that you've quit? Obviously you're still interested in some aspect of Maple Story if you're still participating in a community forum dedicated to the game. If you've made a conscious decision to stop playing Maple, then why have you not eliminated it from your life? Stop visiting the forums, stop thinking about the game; if you don't play it anymore, why is it still a part of your life? If you met/made friends in the game, there are other avenues in which to communicate with them (MSN, Facebook, My Space, whathaveyou). Stop badgering players who actually enjoy playing the game. We know you think the game/community/developer sucks, so distance yourself from it. It's a big world, and there's lots to do in it.

Yes, I've bitched about the game before (mostly about the lack of content for higher level players) but I still like the game, and what keeps me coming back is that the gameplay in this game is unlike many of the other MMO's out there, and it returns me to my nostalgic days of playing Mario Brothers on Super Nintendo.

While I do agree that the game is HEAVILY biased towards those who can acquire NX, the NX is not a requirement of the game. Yes, I myself have NX, but most of the time I do just fine without it. I also agree that here is indeed a monumental lack of customer service/support, even for those who HAVE purchased the NX, and thus, according to some, a right to better service. All these things combined do not equal 1/10th of what is really ruining the game for most, and that is the majority of the community. The majority of the people playing this game are children, either by age or mentality. They feel this undeniable urge to flame, ridicule, taunt and harass. It's almost like a form of Tourette Syndrome that doesn't appear until the person is safely behind a keyboard and monitor. They run around, purposely trying to ruin the fun of playing for others. In my opinion, this is the biggest problem with MapleStory today. The lack of service/support, lack of interaction with the staff, and heavy bias towards NX are all problems, but not as big a problem as the lack of mature community.

I never thought about reaching level 120 as a chore. It kinda just happened. Took me about 3 and a half years to get to it.

I suddenly realized that I was around level 110 and another friend was catching up to that level. I kinda raced her to 4th job and won. : P

It's hard to explain, but I've never looked at the game and thought "Oh damn... I'm only getting 5% an hour... 5 more weeks...".

You speak of "quiting" as if it were quitting from some addition like drugs or gambling. In the sense you say me continuing to visit sp after quitting is like going to an alcoholics anonymous after I quit drinking.

But just because you chose to end something or deciding to stop ding something, you don't necessarily have to end it from your life if it was once a big impact on your life. Take high school for instance. We all hated high school when we're in it. We get in trouble, we have authorities, we have tardy sweeps, we have people calling our parents when we ditch school. But if you ask any person who are out of high school, many people will say they miss high school--high school reunions. If you ask college students, many would trade college for high school again any day.

Okay, a few things.

I want everyone to understand the fact that Maplestory is merely a huge chat client (think of IRC) but with a minigame.

Maplestory is a not a very good game, if you were to look at a purely gaming level. This game requires no skill unlike many shooting games, and most of the boss runs require little organization. I could complain about the many aspects of the game that makes it a horrible game but I'd be wasting my time. If you play this game for the thrill of gaming, I suggest that you quit and play a hardcore game.

I believe that Maplestory is just a chat client that has a minigame that I can play together with my friends. I haven't used MSN for a long time, but think of it like the MSN games. You can chat with a friend while playing the game in the background. Maplestory seems to be the same thing, just on a much larger scale. If you can play Maplestory with the notion that it's just a large chatting program, you shouldn't have any problems having fun. Stop thinking of Maple as a game. It's not that great of a game. If you want to compete with other go play WoW or Counterstrike or something. If you just want to show off your damage go play a Private Server. If you just want to chat and have some fun, come back and play Maple.

Maplestory is a place to socialize. It's a pretty Facebook. It's probably the funnest socializing tool out there. But that's it. It's merely a socializing tool.
