I'm thinking about linking one of my bank accounts to paypal to use with amazon (unless someone knows a reliable alternative) but I'm pretty weary of stuff like this so I'm interested in getting some feedback on your experiences with paypal. And amazon too, actually.
Also, is there anything I should be aware of if I were to sign up for paypal?

Some Amazon services require a credit card, and won't work with Paypal - so I'd make sure the things you actually want to use are ok for it.

Never use your bank account with Papyal. They will randomly, and for no reason, freeze your account for "suspicious activity" and any money stuck on your Papypal account will be theirs for like half a year before your account auto-closes.
Paypal is amazing for using debit and credit cards though, just don't directly link your bank account to them. So many people report Paypal just screwing them over when they add a bank account to it.

If you do a lot of non-Amazon shopping, I do recommend Paypal for card usage, since a lot of online retailers use it. Amazon doesn't because they just want you to get their Amazon cards and such.

If you can, get a debit card. It allows you to buy whatever you want on the Internet, and it's easier to manage as it is simply linked to your bank account.
