Blocking an IP from my ISP?

Hi guys,

My roommate refuses to get a job, and is soaking up a social assistance check every month. He does nothing around our apartment, and his half is barely covered by social assistance. I'm still stuck buying 3/4 grocery loads.

He spends all his time on WoW, not only killing my own connection speed, but capping our internet monthly. I had to pay an extra 50$ last month due to his rampant downloading and somehow hitting our 95gb cap @_@.

He promised when we moved in, he'd find a job, so I put my own job on the line to print him out resumes (I doubt, I'd get fired, but I'd get a warning about printing non-work-related things). Since then, he's made no attempt to get a job, and a close friend even caught him tearing up a few.

A brief explanation to my frustration, walking out the door to walk to work in -30C weather today.
Me: "Why won't you get a job"
Him: "Social Assistance pays my half"
Me: "My taxes pay for your social assistance, you're going to get a job or you're out."
Him: "I only have 3 resumes left."
Me: "I'll print off more today."
Him: "But I can't work weekdays."
Me: "Why not?"
Him: "I have raids Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday."
Me: "Whatever... We'll discuss this later, I'm gunna be late to pay for your life."
Then I left for work.

I just don't feel I should have to come home, do dishes, laundry, and pay for everything, so he can have a free ride.

My bleeding heart stops me from kicking him out, so I'm blocking his WoW instead.

I can't block the ports on my router, since he isn't new to computers, and he'll simply hard reset it. I'm wondering if I call my ISP (Rogers Cable, Canada) do you think they could block it from the trunk, or would I need the specific IP for WoW's login server? I can't do a net-nanny either for that same reason. If I get an antivirus with a master password, he won't install it on his computer, or he'll format it.

If you know the login server IP, or could find it for me (can't access http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/support) from work. I would appreciate it greatly.

Is he a close friend or you just ended up "lucky" and got him as roommate? The situation is pretty hard, you can't keep paying for all the other things he doesn't cover like internet capping or groceries. If you want to be hard on him, cancel the internet and get yourself some G3 or something just for you.

Btw, how old are we talking about?

I'm 20, he's 19. He failed grade 11 twice, and he probably won't even have enough credits this year. He had a bad living environment with his mother, and loaded me full of false promises before we moved in. We were quite close friends until we moved in together, now it seems like whenever I see him, my mood shifts from positive to negative. I guess they're right when they say you shouldn't move in with friends...

TBH I have no idea what a G3 is. Worst case scenario I'll get myself a mobile internet stick and keep it on me at all times. I refuse to go without internet because he's being a retard.

I called the ISP, and they said that a block on their end is impossible, apparently they don't have the tools to do so.

I'm just going to have to password the router, and block the authentication server port. I'll check the traffic logs every day and warn him that I'll cancel the internet subscription should he fail to comply with my rules. Sure, the router has a reset button, but a cancelled connection does not, thankfully.

Ironically enough, his subscription is on his girlfriends credit card... She pays for his WoW.

She's currently out of province, and they play together to "hang out."

Our router shows an average of 8 hours of traffic (through port 3724, the login/authentication server) per day for the past 2 months.

Whether or not she's out of province, I shouldn't have to work 40+ hours a week and still do all the housework, as well as pay for most of everything.

He just goes in his room, locks the door (which I never wanted a lock on his door in the first place, mainly for fire/safety reasons), and won't respond with replies other than "I'm busy" or "I'm raiding"...

I hate to be the devil's advocate, but you need to take a firm stance on this, especially on his addiction. Give him a firm warning once, then kick him out if he doesn't comply. Didn't you say you guys were close friends until you guys started being roommates (and seeing who he really was)? You might want to use that as a jumping off point to express your feelings about this situation. Maybe mention how this has affected the friendship between you both?

@Will: That's basically what I'm going to do tonight. I texted him saying we need to talk. I'll be giving him 3 options:

1) Get a job, WoW gets unblocked, equal share of house chores.
2) Keep living off social assistance, No WoW, Laundry must be done, dishes must be done.
3) Move out

Where 3) basically isn't an option for him, it's down to how much his WoW means to him.

I feel you can't get through this point without some ultimatum, courage with facing your friend and his addiction. I know it's hard =P.

I don't know how it works since I'm not tech-saavy, but he set up some kind of a network where he has to approve of certain MAC Addresses from specific computers to be able to connect to our router, on top of his encrypted wireless securty keyphrase. Somehow, no matter what you do to try to connect, whether it's wireless or hardwired, you cannot connect without expressed permission from the administrator of the network.

A plastic, clear box. Have it out in the open so it tempts him. "Here's the router, but you can't get to it to reset it to be able to connect to my internet. However, you can watch these pretty lights blink for a while."

antenna can be left out, you really just need some sorta metal band that locks that goes over the "reset".

that or you can use a wooden one. OR somehow keep the router in your room.

That or tell him to NOT f with the router, else he'll be kicked.

if your isp requires login, change the login password
erase the login info. in modem. ie. login info. will store in router instead
then set the settings in your router

thus, hard reset the router will make him no-longer able to access the internet

I don't want to block him from the internet all-together, just WoW.

I like this idea. Get a small acrylic box and lock it in there.
