I'm sorry, but I don't quite get it..
I'm sure some of you or even most of you already know and have thought about this before.. but..
What is the purpose of MapleStory?
I just feel like, everything is "accessible" to everyone in this game.
If you're funded and godly, you beat the game.. all that is left to do in reach Level 200.
If there were more restrictions in Maple, then leveling up (the main and ONLY purpose of the game)
For example.. Papulatus.
Now, you must reach Level 120 to fight Papulatus.
That's good, that is something that's worth achieving..
Other than Papulatus, nothing has level requirements..
If, in the end, MapleStory had a boss you had to fight to "win the game" wouldn't that be more appealing?
Sure, you could face the boss again and again.. but making that boss only fight-able at Level, let's say, Level 19x would be so much better.
Bosses in MapleStory are, what I feel, the greatest and most fun aspect.
If there was some sort of process..
Level 120 = 4th job
Level 130 = A Boss
Level 140 = Next Boss
Level 150 = Next Boss
Etc..
Then, wouldn't that be more fun?
Everyone ALREADY levels and trains.. just now, they have something to look forward to each 10 levels.. all the way to Level 200, the last boss.
Just a thought.. because it's obvious that grinding to Level 200, with the occasional bossing when you're not grinding, is the only purpose of this game.
Don't flame me, I like MapleStory.. just frustrated

What are the purposes of games in general?

Killing monsters, to see numbers go higher, and then kill more monsters. It's not something you actually have a purpose, you can't actually explain such things or get philosophy in the way at all...
Games have no purpose. If you keep searching for purposes in everything, even life doesn't have one.
.
But i actually agree with you in some aspects. Like that level restriction. Not only that, but the fact the final boss never shows up.
It wouldn't kill the point if you could defeat Black Mage, since all we have been fighting were his subordinates, although their leader was defeated, more subordinates could show up.

Videogames: design based on the need to waste free time. If we didn't have videogames, we'd all be riding bikes or playing baseball or something outside.

You make what you want to out of this game. Making friends, making money, grinding levels, improving gear, collecting novelty gear...
Doesn't have to culminate in some kind of spectacular ending like an end-all boss fight. People get their kicks from different things.
Have fun. Waste time. Do what you want. 'cause its free.

Actually, if there was a Final Boss you defeat and then "win the game", it would defeat the purpose (which is to keep you playing forever so Nexon keeps making money off you).
As it is, even after reaching 200 you are supposed to keep playing to improve your gear and prepare for the next, bigger, badder boss, coming next patch or next year...

Maplestory is intended for 'casual gamers' - It's not meant to have a specific point so it appeals to a wider range of people who can each get from it whatever they want without feeling any specific pressure to have to get something done or to otherwise 'finish'.
It's not having what you want - It's wanting what you've got.

Actually, since MS2 "is coming out" (as in like, two or three years), there might be a final boss, you defeat him and the story picks up in MS2.
I like the idea of level'd bossing. Especially for low levels, like my Mech. I like bossing, but besides Mano Stumpy, and in a couple of levels, King Crab, there aren't any bosses, so I like the idea.

To waste time, instead of moving on with our lives.
I have quit maple story because I have been looking at which games are most efficient in providing that dopamine in our brains to trigger. Maple story takes way to long to trigger that. Games like DotA, and some shooters provide this.

For someone who makes a new character every other day, you shouldn't need to ask us what makes Maple fun.

This thread is stupid. The purpose of games is to have fun. if you don't have fun, quit.

I think the thread title was a bit misleading. Implied an overall context rather than an in-game one, which is what I think the TS meant. In an overall context Maplestory has no purpose other than to waste time in a (hopefully) enjoyable manner, irrespective of what you do on it.
Maplestory in-game though is what the player makes it. The player makes their own purpose based on what is given to them in-game. This is where the whole "it's your story" thing came from. Outside of required quests, you can do pretty much anything you want in-game and still progress fairly constantly.

I think we solidified that even if they make MS2 a real sequel it will be developed by a completely different team so that MS1 continues. I still think after we defeat the Black Mage we'll get some message from him that says. "Haha you think you've defeated me? We'll just see about that! For I am not the only evil who's terrorized the Maple World!"
