I tried Dvorak for a week. Best I got was 43 WPM; I got bored and just went back to QWERTY.

I can't use DVORAK. It's not that it isn't better - it might be. But when I work in a corporate environment I'll have to work on hundreds of computers. As such, they will all have to be QWERTY because everyone uses QWERTY. I can't go around changing people's keyboard settings just for me.

Dvorak scares me. But I'd love to try it.

I've never even heard of a Dvorak keyboard before, but I do know the musical composer with that name =/

I'd never do Dvorak... 80+ WPM with my beloved QWERTY is fine by me.

I type in both. You really can't just drop QWERTY altogether if you do a lot of work on public/company computers or play PC games a lot. My QWERTY isn't as good as it used to be (about 85 wpm compared to 95ish pre-learning Dvorak). About 90 wpm in Dvorak. I don't notice any sort of speed increase obviously, but with Dvorak my fingers definitely feel less fatigue after using the computer for a while.

I'm surprised your fingers get tired at all. I can play for DAYS and my fingers won't get tired, rather I'd just get sleepy. Never even heard of dvorak though, doesn't seem like I'd ever be able to use it though. QWERTY ftw.

QWERTY is only used because its common. Its one of the most inefficient designs. We only think it is efficient because we learned to use it first. Its like how Americas prefer English or our crappy measuring systems are only considered easy and efficient because we learned them first.
Edit: I should also mention that QWERTY was designed for typewriters and it's design was meant to slow the typist down. Since Typewriters didnt allow you to erase mistakes and edit your paper, slow typing was important.

I don't know what my speed is like in qwerty now (I don't use it at all, since I never have to use public/shared computers), but I noticed both a speed increase (95 qwerty -> 130 dvorak) and it's definitely a lot more comfortable on my hands.
A big difference is that I can type dvorak homerow style, I could never learn qwerty that way. So it's just a more natural fit of keyboard to hands. It took me something like 3 days to learn the homerow typing, then about 4 weeks to get up to decent (80+wpm) speeds. It's just improved since then, now I'm at about the limit of how fast I can think/press keys.
I type a lot every day, in the range of ~8000-10000 words, so it's important that my hands are comfortable when doing it. Qwerty used to give me finger pain on longer stretches of typing, Dvorak doesn't seem to ever get to that point.

Wouldn't this only matter if you type properly? I myself just peck so my speed doesn't change much when using a different keyboard set-up.
