Black Phoenix Shield - why so expensive?
#1
Is it just because it's the best common class shield, with no stat requirements?
Or does it really "grow stronger over time" as the description hints?

nah, it doesnt grow stronger.. i just assume it's exspenive because it's ITCG nothing more

Well, let's take a look at common shields:

Stolen Fence - 5 W. Def 7 Slots
Pan Lid - 10 W. Def 7 Slots
Maple Shield - 10 W. Def 10 M. Def. 1 Avoid 10 Slots
Black Phoenix Shield - 20 W. Def 20 M. Def 7 Slots
Palette - Forgot stats >_<

Palette comes from gachapon and Maple Shields are way up there in cost because they're either clean or are scrolled for some stat. That leaves either something simple like a Pan Lid or a Black Phoenix Shield. Confused

I believe it's expensive because it requires a Black Versal Materia to forge. These only came from iTCG set 1, so they are fairly rare now.

(Edit: Oh yeah, and the good stats of a clean one! Biggrin)

I would go with the material needed to make and not the extra 10wepdef and magdef.

Oh, right. XD But still, a clean Black Phoenix shield is definitly cheaper then a clean Maple Shield and probably a Palette (they are kind of rare, aren't they? Confused )

Just because it is iTCG is no reason for people to be willing to pay a lot for it.
If I understand NoJobNoRules correctly, you're saying my first assumption was right: it's because this is the best Common shield so demand is high from mages (especially lukless) and dexless thieves.

But a (one-handed) warrior or dex thief are not missing anything by using their class-specific shields (that cost maybe 1% of a Black Phoenix Shield). Am I right?

iTCG All the way!

I have a black phoenix shield sitting in my inventory, because I thought it was cool looking so I made it. (Back when first set was still in production..)

Now I find out it's worth like 20 million. What?!!!

Also, it's the "next best thing" for non-mage classes for attack shields and such. You can scroll it with attack scrolls, it's cheaper than a maple shield...only trouble is it doesn't have 10 slots.

Orit, you got it. This is assuming that you are referring to clean shields as they stand. I've seen maple shields that easily outdo warrior only/thief only shields when both are scrolled for attack.

Statless classes usually use statless shields since they can be scrolled for their designated stat while still being common class. It is kind of like bathrobes and saunas. There are better overalls, but the fact that they can be used for multiple jobs means they're more valuable.

I use a 17 DEX 9 ACC lvl 30 Dragon Robe on my crusader. A 17 DEX 9 ACC Sauna Robe would sell for more then my Dragon Robe because the Sauna is all jobs while the Dragon is only for warriors. Confused

Maple Shields are far more expensive though. Buying a clean one through MTS is ~18-20k NX. A Black Phoenix, IIRC, is only like 4-6k, max. Confused

a lot of things in the market makes no sense. its like why the shop next to yours sold stance20 for 150mil while the stance20 in your shop costs 75mil and is unsold. ive seen a lot of this.

It's part of the first itcg set, which is no longer in production.

people are just stupid, its not better than a stolen fence but idiots buy it.

Two reasons: iTCG and it looks cool. Otherwise, it's no better than a Stolen Fence.

True, it's no better than a Stolen Fence unless you actually want it for defense. Wink

I have one on my Bandit-to-be for that reason. I spent about 2M to make it when iTCG1 was first out, and I haven't attempted to scroll it for anything. That character is level 27 so I don't see any point in spending tons of mesos on it yet. 20 W/M-Def was far better than any other shield I was going to get at that time; combined with a Grilled Cheese potion it was almost as good as having GM Blessing. Glitter

Of course, I'm sure that's a silly reason. Nobody really uses shields for defense these days, right?

Pfft. I use my islander's all the time. Nakey fighting and taking 1's ftw. <3

But yea, most don't use them for defense. Confused

When I first found out what all the HHG1 people spamming 'B>panlid' meant, 3 years ago, I thought it was ridiculous to pay 200-300k for a shield with 10 defense. But since it was the best thing mages/dits could use at the time, they got it anyway.

Same thing here, but on a much larger scale.

the fk? a 7 slot shield? if it dont have 10 slots it shouldnt cost as much as a maple shield.

infact it should cost about 1m top.
id rather use a stolen fence.

It doesn't cost as much as a maple shield. Unless you're going to tell me that you can buy a shield for 10k+ NX less then a Maple Shield and then sell it for the same price as a Maple Shield...<_<

That shield is pretty much just for the looks or maybe the defense... if you think about it, it's the best-looking common non-maple shield in the game right now, and even if you went for a stolen fence, it's pretty much impossible to cover it up with nx shields because they look equally as bad, if not worse. Nexon would get a lot of sales from invisible shields if they ever decide to release them.
