They're usually scattered songs, hence only English metal: Within Temptation, (what is this, I don't) Evanescence, sum 41, The Faint, Nightwish... does Marilyn Manson count as metal? I don't have a particular artist.

Rock. If he was considered as Metal, then this would definitely be the first time I've ever heard of such. But yeah, he's def Rock.

I listen to...

- Anime music (Especially Pokemon and Planetes)
- Some Dance and Trance
- Some fantasy metal stuff (Like Dragonforce and Rhapsody)
- Drums, Bass, anything with a good strong rhythm (One of my favourite maplestory sound tracks is Kerning City). Sadly this is non existant on a laptop.
- Game music (I like a lot of the maplestory music, not a fan of the DFO music though)

sum 41 is closer to pop rock than it is metal. I mean, I might be willing to let it slide as JUST ROCK but there's no way you can call that metal.

I second this. Metal is at the garbage end of music.

DeanNim Wrote:Pop mainly. I do alt rock, rmb and jazz. Is bossanova a genre ?

Ok, to show my variety of tastes, I'm naming artists instead,

Gaga(the next madonna, your argument is invalid£
Rihanna(she has a variety of genre history but mainly categorised as pop)
Miley(her can't be tamed does dance and stuff but still considered pop)
Katy perry(pop)
Taylor swift(country but categorised as pop)
Jason mraz(he's countyish but mainly categorised as pop)
Zeeavi(classical? Country? No idea)
Fred Astaire(need I explain?)
2pm(dance)
Snsd(they have a variety of genres)
Cn blue(mainly rock)
Allstar weekend(no idea but they sound synth rock I guess?)

Pasta from the speakeasy thread. Miley gaga and Katy could be categorised as one but I don't think 'pop' is a genre by itself. Pop mostly refers to the modern music we listen to like dance, rmb and etc ... Even rock/rnb is categorised as pop nowadays

Not.. what I meant. I was referring to the fact that it was unexpected, not that Metal sucks. I listen to .. Metal, ya know.

I'd say Sum 41 is mainly punk rock actually. It's not really pop punk with their latest songs imo

Compare music to food. You either like it, or you don't. Some stuff is acquired-taste. I swear to God, I'm the only Asian that listens to Metal in my town. It's like how I think Rap is boring, but I'm not going to state "Rap sucks" at whoever that posted mostly Rap music. :| Some people end up listening to certain genres based on their social-groups too. Because I hung out with mostly people outside of my own ethnicity, most of my friends geared towards: Metal, Rock, and VGM. Because of that, I ended up taking a liking to Metal near High School. I used to listen to K-pop and J-pop a sh`itload when I was younger, now I think most of it is boring. It really depends on your lifestyle and who you hang out with.

It is something you learn to understand. I myself can barely understand what many popular songs are actually saying. So many words sound similar I usually just totally bastardize the meaning of the song.

The biggest quall I have with mainstream music are the God awful lyrics. It's nice to see popular artists sing something that is somewhat poetic and heartfelt, as opposed to just being sexual or promoting a bad lifestyle. I don't generally like the instruments, but that is another story. Instruments represent something much different and abstract, as opposed to words which are generally very blatant about their meaning. The other one I have is that it is so fake. Most of the mainstream artists are pretty faces that are sort of marketing someone else's music. The songwriters, the people who put together the instruments/beat, they're all largely ignored. Society just recognizes the media figure as the one with all the talent. Good music is made by many people, and they all deserve credit. I love the whole band mentality.

I myself like heavier metal for 2 reasons: 1) For the most part, I feel as if the artists I listen to have more to say than that they love to have sex, and 2) I love the instrumentation and style. Screaming is something I've grown accustomed to, especially since it blends into instrumentation so much better whereas clean vocals tend to overpower the instruments for me. I don't listen to it because it is br00tal, or that I am angry or anything. Actually, I actually feel it is somewhat soothing to me jsut because I am listening to music I enjoy.

You love metal ? Idk why but only some song appeal to me, but overall normal rock like deep purple satisfies my craving for 'rock' better, if I get them. Now theres so much more variety like pop rock, synth rock etc... It makes metal ancient

There's nothing wrong with listening to Metal. IRL, I don't look like I listen to Metal because I don't try to look it, and most of the times, when people do that, they're pretty hardcore fakes anyways. I only listen to Metal a lot when I'm driving, jogging, running, or even playing competitive video games. It gives me an energetic feeling. Not so much as aggression. Even then, some people that listens to Metal either steers towards darker and/or heavier stuff such as Black or Death Metal. Something I'll rarely listen to or come across. A friend of mine (IRL) loves Death Metal, but I enjoy Power Metal more. We actually exchanged music a couple of times just so he gets to hear what I listen to, and vice-versa. That's also something I enjoy about Metal, is due to the large sub-genres of it. Then there's VGMs with Metal-influences, an example of an artist as such would be Saitama Saisyu Heiki. Also, while I agree that Pop may have a lot of sub-genres as well, I disagree that it has more "variety" than Metal.

Examples of music with Metal-influences:

 Spoiler

2nd song sounds like something from Dragonforce. I got into Metal more when I started listening to SSH because of the style of his songs. Then there's bands like Disturbed that can be considered as "Nu Metal", but Disturbed themselves stated that they consider themselves to be Rock. There's usually a significant gap between Rock and Metal, but if you compare Rock to Melodic Metal, you might not see it as much, as an example.

I also don't see your point about Metal being ancient. If you were to trace music history back, Metal's more new than Pop. Metal's still considered as underground music (I hope I'm right on this) anyways.

Metal grows too. You have so many different subgenres of metal it isn't even funny. For the most part, what I listen to isn't actually your typical metal (at least what most people think of it). Most people call what I listen to hardcore now, but it is still heavily metal influenced. Like, for example, I think that most people would not expect a song like this:

It is a screaming song, but it is singing about how we should love each other and stuff. It also has a very ambient feeling synthesizer playing the whole way through.

I wouldn't say metal is underground music at all. There are just so many subgenres of metal that aren't really known.
