I have a friend irl (she's Caucasian), and she's actually fluent in Japanese even though she's in the US. Definitely hates anime, for sure. Rants about it constantly. But her boyfriend is overseas in Japan, so yea. I've seen her spoke Japanese once, and she really.. sounded like an actual Japanese person, rather scary. >___> Think she must have studied Japanese for years and years..

I practice anonymously on Nicolive chats (this is really really good for practice, if you haven't tried yet). They don't seem to have much of a problem understanding me, and are more than happy to point out my mistakes. But I'm not going to practice with a name attached.

So I do get the chance to practice, and do get better, but certainly not comfortable enough with it yet. I mostly wanna learn it for reading anyway, and when it comes to reading I'm pretty decent.

Speaking Japanese isn't really hard. Most of their syllables are easy for English speakers to pronounce. There are only a few tricky ones there. The stereotypical "American" accent of Japanese comes mostly from grammar and how strongly they pronounce some vowels.
