Looking for all information on this skill. Some things like
- Approx cast time
- How it fairs in DPS calcs, when is it viable to use, etc
- It's damage is solely dependent on current dex/str (i.e. MW would affect it, but an apple won't)
Assume max octo. Mostly hoping kaida visits this thread since she's only sair I know who's done research on it + actually has the skill at decent level.

-810 ms (0.81 seconds)
-For DPS and such, smart use of my calculator (link is in my siggy) will let you figure that out pretty easily. There's a cell for damage with Octopus. Be sure to read the notes on the cells; they explain how things work in case it's unclear.
-It's damage is dependent on DEX and STR only, so yes, what you said is true.
As for when it's viable to use, I'd say all the time during bossing. At low levels it's kind of meh (only a little better if you're frame-perfect), but at high levels it is *always* worth the time it takes to cast and then some. Even if you're appled/gelted/demon elixer'd. So long as you're sure that Octopus is hitting the enemy for his full duration, he's worth casting. In fact, that's why I added the "efficiency" cell in my calculator, so you can see what % of the time he'd need to be attacking for him to be worth casting. He's not worth casting if you know the boss is about to guard, but that's the only situation.
I have in fact altered my style against HT specifically so that I can cast Octopus as much as possible. Whenever I'm attacking facing left, I try and jump-cast Octo when I move right. When I'm on the top left, I try and move forward so I can cast him on the first step (if you don't cast him on the step he won't attack, even though he's in range. Idiot). And I always cast him 3 times whenever a head guards. He's really great.
As for training, you would never really want to use it if your boat isn't broken. All that will do is draw unnecessary aggro and get you hurt more. But for situations like this, he's perfect.
That's all I can think of at the moment. If it wasn't obvious, I'd like you to know that I love Octopus.

Mk that's the stuff I was looking for. I knew it was good, just wasn't sure how good, especially when playing with apples. And I'm only speaking in a bossing perspective since i 1hko skeles pretty much all the time, <3 eboost30
How do you jump cast octo, usually when you cast it, don't you stop moving completely until it pops out?
Bullseye DAMAGE effects it?
Bullseye HOMING effects it?
I can't wait until I max this sucker.

Where you press the skill and jump at the same time so that you can cast a skill that normally can only be used on the ground in mid-air. You can jump-cast almost everything -- summons, all magic, most archer skills, etc.

Yes.
Quote:Bullseye HOMING effects it?
No, unfortunately.

Yeah he's great. What level are you?

Keep forgetting to ask this one:
When I'm doing octo, i usually end up forgetting to recast it every 12~ seconds, sometimes I just end up doing it for 1 full duration, seeing the notice, then recasting. Then i just drop the ruse all together. Any tips that remind you to cast it as much as possible? Or you just press it every chance you get.

skills in the bottom right (the little pop up window with home / pg up / pg down / etc) - if they have a cooldown you can see them cooldown similar to skills in the top right (i.e. how they fill up gray when their duration is running out, in the bottom right the gray drops until they're clear again). you can see it with both octopi and air strike in the video kaidatan linked.

Yeah I already know about this, but was wondering if there's another way. It's already a pain because my octo is on my set of keys that i use in rare circumstances, and if i move it to a more primary keyslot, i gotta remove something else.

I'm pretty sure you can change which skills are displayed on your quickslot. Just change one of them to Octo. I just pay attention to the box, I don't really know of a better way to do it.

Mk, yea I was just wondering if there was a better/another way than looking at quickslot for the cooldown.

I almost always try to use octo all the time, but it sorta depends on the boss and if I'm appled or not. If I'm not appling I always get octo out the entire time, but if I am appling it depends on the boss and if my ship's down or not. At bosses that have wdef up I only use octo when they actually have wdef up at that time or if my ship's down. It's just depressing to take the time to cast octo and to see wdef up kick in a second later. You could've used that time to fire an extra cannon or 2.
As for not forgetting to cast it, I try to periodically press it and not look at the cooldown too much. It kind of becomes a habit that way.
