Cover, or Original?

the question is simple, which do you think is better when it comes to songs, the originals or the remakes, or does it come down to a case-by-case decision?

personally i think its a case-by-case thing.

Depends on the song. If it's horrible to start with, there isn't much direction to go but up. The same goes the other way. Then there are some covers that are almost identical.

It is definitely a case-by-case basis. To say that all remakes are worse, or that all remakes are better is pretty extreme, if you ask me.

compared to

just one example that comes to mind.
then theres:

with this:

being superior to the original IMO.

Cover. Covers are done later on. In the 5, 10, 20 years after the original, sound quality has greatly improved, standards and expectations of artists has raised, high definition, more modern, and standardized.

Not always.

It depends on the singer and genre. I don't want a rock cover to be done by a popstar singer.

Personal experience and preference. I've yet to encounter a cover I didn't like. If I didn't like it, it's probably because I didn't like the original anyway.

The latter is obviously better.

Again, the latter is better. Paramore even thinks so!

skip to 1:21 for the actual song.

you've got a good point, but sometimes the original's are just better. they just... for some reason sound better. even if the quality is lesser than the cover, it just sounds better coming from the original.
good example:

'course theres tons of MJ covers out there, Smooth Criminal comes to mind first and foremost, but this one just fits the example of where original > cover.

^Toxic has been covered by tons of artists. Some are better than the original, some are worse. As everyone said, it's a case-by-case.

Here's some covered songs that I enjoy both versions of.

Case by case.

What Locked said is pretty true too. The scenario he used was what I was planning to say about this; except vice versa: a pop into a rock song.

Alien Ant Farm's "Smooth Criminal" is in no way superior to Michael Jackson's; the guitar was no substitute for the sweet bassline. The bassline gives it this nice groove and feel that's a lot nicer sounding and it's more dance-able too. The way the singer sings it doesn't feel right too, but I must admit- he gets the "Owww!"s and "Hoo"s as well as the high-pitched parts done pretty nicely.

However, a good case of a cover being better than the original in a different genre I can think of is what Jimi Hendrix did with some of Bob Dylan's music; a particular favorite of mine being "All Along the Watchtower". Hell, Bob Dylan's performs "All Along the Watchtower" live with a version closer to Hendrix's than his own original recording.

EDIT: Hahaha. Forgot about "Beat It". Meanwhile, I know you guys have all heard "Billie Jean". Tossing in this remix with mostly Michael audio with Kanye from the 25th Anniversary version of the Thriller Album.

Most covers that I hear which are within the same genre as the original never stick in my head because they still sound like the original. So I generally never really remember a cover I've heard. Not that they're bad, they're just frequently more of them same.
The exception:

I like this one more than the original. Which I realize is kind of blasphemy given it's a Queen song. Then again, Electric Six is the same awesome group behind gay bar.

Then when you start genre-crossing, things get a lot more interesting:

Me like.

I directed that comment to the second part of your post. Sometimes covers are made months after the original. Sometimes covers are just fan covers (those can be good, sometimes).

Most covers I listen to tend to be relatively close in age to the original. But that's probably because of my music preferences.

Depends on who did the remixing. SSH remixes are great.

Original:

SSH's version:

The OC remix is great too:

I prefer remixes over originals, most of the time.

Oh... if you bring in fan covers, that's entirely different. I thought we were sticking to the discussion of "official" covers (covers done by actual singers).

 Holding Out for a Hero

 My Heart Will Go On

 Touch

For My Heart Will Go On, Yuna Ito's cover may or may not be better varying from people to people but also because Celine Dion's version was pretty damn good on its own. But for the most part, I prefer covers for better sound/reasons I explained and because it sometimes also throws in remixes.

As for fan covers, those cover an extremely wide spectrum. It goes from from extremely shi`tty to extremely amazing like most recently, Lin Yu Chun aka Fat Taiwanese Boy's cover of Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You.

lol and here, I was thinking you were nuts cuz they were talking about fan-made covers. Fan made covers really are just ... different.

That Liu Yu Chun's cover of Whitney's song left me staring at the screen speechless though. ... I wonder if he still has his .. package.

It depends if the remake is good or not.. I usually don't mind originals, but not all originals are brilliant.. so if an artist can modernise them and keep them catchy and upbeat. Then yay if not then oh well.
