Understanding Maplestory and how amazing it actually is from a average gamers view.

Nexon america probably codes only 20%-40% of the game. But I do see everyones point in they're a professional company but you still have to give them some slack. I do agree that the pirate skill sounds are one of the many things nexon could easily fix but chose not to. But glitches are part of a games life and if they're fixed then people shouldn't be holding it against the company for the rest of the games life. Its like if I forget a school assignment, I do it any way and turn it in even though it will still be a 0. And I don't hold it against me and neither do any of the teachers yet.

From what evidence did you conclude the 20-40% of coding? My understanding is that Nexon is the game publisher only. Publishers generally don't develop as well. And yes, glitches are a fact of life. For most game companies, fixing glitches soon after they're reported is also a fact of life.

Not so much for Nexon/Wizet as many an old school archer on this forum can attest to. Nexon has a looooooooooooong history of not fixing glitches in a timely manner, of not addressing in game issue is a timely manner, of not managing their server checks, etc. There are still plenty of glitches/bugs in the game that have not been addressed for a long time. Your school assignment analogy is simply an epic fail. I barely understood what you're trying to say.

I just guessed on that LOL.

Masteria was created by Nexon America and not Nexon Korea, right? Nexon America seems to have trouble with monster invincibility frames. BF, wolf spiders and elderwraiths all that invincibility frames problem.

I never said that, I just said your comments contradict each other. They CANT make all their players happy, I agree. But, it should be things like NX> Non NX players or how NLs with SE are too OP. Balance issues would be realistic just like the whole ele wand debate. But when it comes to things like glitches, you shut down and fix it ASAP, you don't continue letting people exploit it then ban them later. That's like hey instead of a normal meal I brought you a feast fit for a King, and they stick it in your face for (how long did that glitch continue for?) X amount of time expecting you NOT to touch it. They could EASILY just take away the feast and make you less tempted to eat it, but instead they just leave it there and when you finally take a bite, you get banned.

I've said this once before. Just because people haven't experienced the bad side of NEXON doesn't mean others haven't. So whoo dee doo if you don't have a problem with them. Gratz if you haven't been hacked/banned/behind in terms of items due to a glitch, but some people have. Banned for NX fraud even when you don't purchase NX? Banned for leveling too fast? If these things HAVEN'T happened to you, then gratz!

I remember reading something about how the idea was pitched by NEXAM to KMS developers or something of the sort. I'm not too sure about it though

There isn't a single publisher that delt with invincibility frames for the mobs instead of characters except NA. In that sense i guess you can sympathize with any screw ups they make, especially if korea was involved and things were lost in translation.

Lua <3

On topic, it feels like you're kind of stating the obvious. Of course producing a game is a large task. Almost every industrial product you see is the result of a large task. That's what large corporations and industries are for, and many of them do their job well.

The bigfoot poison/web/etc. glitch was a great example of negligence, as many of us called it just by looking at the changes in the patch before the game even went up. All it took to fix it was a quick patch to change boss = 0 to boss = 1 on bigfoot, yet it took weeks to fix.

cMS or whichever version did the showa censoring also gave extra Ds invincibility and screwed up majorly on bodyguard B in so many ways =/

Also, tMS' Taipei 101 rolling CDs have the knockback issue like old elderwraiths, typhons, windraiders, bigfoot, etc. where the monster freezes for a second then displays the knockback image and thus the kerning square copypaste versions as well. I honestly can't understand how things like this could go unnoticed, it's so obvious to see in-game and so easy to fix just by removing the extra image under the push value of a monster.

As people have said before, just because it's a lot of code doesn't excuse bugs and glitches staying around forever, and it certainly doesn't excuse abominable customer service.

The problem with the MapleStory code, as far as I can tell (as a professional programmer who's never actually seen any of the code) is that it's horribly designed. Or rather, lacking in design.
I don't know the actual history of the game's development, but the way it seems to me, it started out as a single-player rpg written by someone who knows some C but has no formal programming training - and thus knows nothing of data structures, algorithms, database normalization, design patterns, etc. He/she was just having fun with sprites.
Then it got expanded, first to peer-to-peer and later to a client-server model, but the amateurish design elements remained, making bugs inevitable, performance atrocious, and hacker-exploitable security holes plentiful.

It really needs to be rewritten from scratch. But who's got time for that? They don't even want to fix the smaller, easily fixable stuff (like those pirate sounds, or glitched hitboxes). Just slap another patch on, using the same crappy foundations, make a flashy ad, and rake in the money from new players.

Ohai guise I run this restaurant with cockroaches in the kitchen and flies in the soup, BUT GIVE ME SOME CREDIT I GOTTA ATTEND A FREAKING LOT OF PEOPLE AND DO A TON OF ADMINISTRATIVE STUFF.

You're really just explaining the reason why they suck, but the fact that they suck is still unjustified <_<

The single best investment nexon america could ever make would be to hire college kids to play the damn game. Minimum wage, play it test it use it and abuse it. I can't think of a single friend who would pss up the chance to help fix a game they enjoy and ESP get paid for it. Have weekly biweekly whtvr meetings, talk about all the screwups and then fix it. He'll they could hire someone to play every damn class and cover it inside out lvl 1-200 and it would cost pennies to nexon and actually revive the game.

I just can't understand why they don't seem to understand their own game. I work on the side for Baltimore creative group and we do temp contract jobs. I just finished a 3 month job for a freaking Christian learning game. I was looking for graphic errors and testing for different input devices. They had 13 of us testing this game and it paid 20$ an hr for 20 hrs a week. This was some local small time publisher and they took the incentive to hire out ppl to test this software. Nexon could step things up soooo easily!

So, we shouldn't blame Nexon because MS has "a lot of code". Are you kidding me? Its a goddam computer game, of course it has a lot of code.

The problem is not that glitches exist, but that Nexon doesn't deal with them properly. They don't announce the existence of the glitch, then issue a non-descript umbrella ban to take care of the problem. So instead of fixing the problem, they punish their players. In other cases, they completely ignore an easily fixed glitch (bigfoot - 1 line of code). How can that be justified?

bad example then, but I think I saw it mentioned somewhere that the DB has separate tables for items depending where they are (inventory, equipped, duey, storage, etc.) And if the Lua scripts have as much power as js, Nexon really isn't using them well (not familiar with Lua)

I think the customer service and support failures of nexon taint everyones perspectives when it comes to "giving them a break" as far as i can tell Nexon America is just a franchize that does very little actual design work in house.

I don't know about you guys, but if I went to a restaurant and asked for 3 things, a main dish, a side dish, and a drink. The drink came back half-filled, the (lets say a steak, even though I hate pure steak and all that) was cold in the middle and still bloody red, barely cooked, and the side dish(lets say salad) was drenched with so much dressing I couldn't even see the salad, needless to say, I'd complain about spending my money on such awful service from a professional diner. If they told me ''Give us some slack, we have a lot of other orders so you'll have to deal with it'', I would obviously NEVER go to that sad excuse of a place ever again, I don't care how hard their job is, they do that job because that's their choice to do it and if they're not going to do it professionally then why the hell do they do it? Nexon may have a rough time, but they have the same amount of support as a half-assed private server runner has.

There are a few things that Nexon deserves patience and forgiveness for, but for most of their acts, well....This is a company, not a hobby, unless they say otherwise, I guess.

The problem with this is arguement is, other MMOs i know of and currently play does NOT run into THIS many, and this LEVEL, of errors.

And they are ran by less funded. and smaller companies. This means that Nexon, a far more well off company: if not just fixing these problems IS capable of improving to the level of other companies at LEAST.

recently, there's pretty much been a "what the heck?" sort of bug or issue after almost every single patch this year that was beyond the usual "server going online issues" From account data being spammed on forums to remote hacks to hacked GMs to bugged PQ buffs to the return of 8x to Duping issues to event-rewarded scrolls being hacked. and all of this occuring just 3 months into 2010. I've been checking even game forums i DON'T play to see if this level of fail exists elsewhere.

Can't find them. ntreev was the only company that came close.

Seeing as how for a while back in 2008 i never encountered this many issues in such short time while playing MS. I'm more convinced this is just a sudden influx of carelessness.

So either A: Nexon has dropped the ball. or B: MapleStory is so crappily coded it really needs to be dropped at this point due to it being so easily bugged/ easily hacked.

Pity a cooperation that uses underhanding gambling to minors through in game methods? GTFO.

It's not even how they distribute their cash to the players, that's the players choice to exploit it, I don't blame the gm's for abuse of NX. However, they have many other problems that need fixing...If it were just a problem of cash items then I doubt people would complain as much.

Really? This isn't obvious or anything Rolleyes But at the same time if it was a cash item then that involves real money, so that could backfire quite quickly.

shroum Wrote:Come on guys, Give nexon some credit!

I'm afraid I won't, mostly because...
  • I, among many other people, guessed that HT-pendant could be scrolled multiple times with hammer.
  • I, among many other people, guessed that BF would be glitched twice: When bigfoot came out, and when bigfoot got its damage reduced and it yielded a ban.
  • I (among many other people?) also found easily out how and why hackers would give 250 Chaos Scrolls for 70 pitches.

And go figure: I haven't had a single class involving making games, programming security-holes, programming sockets, etc. The only class I've really had is basic programming in Java.

Shouldn't that say something? I could have prevented those errors before the patch was up, and I'm not even a professional programmer.
