Nexon Wrote:Dear Maplers,
We announced on January 28 that MapleStory will be changing the method for starting the game (click here for more info). To prepare for this change, MapleStory will have an update this week that will make a change to the login procedure for the game.
When you log into MapleStory for the first time after 2/10/2010, you will be prompted to create a PIC (Personal Identification Code) on the Character Select screen. After you have a PIC you will no longer need to enter your old PIN at login.
A few notes on PICs:
1. PICs can be 6 to 16 characters long.
2. PICs can use letters and numbers and are case sensitive.
3. PICs are entered on the Character Select screen.
Happy Mapling!

Very nice actually...

I predict alot of hacked accounts at the small window where there is no PIN or PIC

Well done. Addressing the problems without actually addressing the problems verbally. Impressive.

is the method of entering the PIC the same as entering are PIN, e.g. the mouse and key board thing o.o? to other versions that may have it

This.
At least I can finally use some of my other accounts that I forgot the pin to and lost the false information needed to request a reset.

FYI: this new system will probably let you type your PIC in with your own keyboard (and allow you to use the soft keyboard as well), and this might make more people fall victim to keyloggers (I'd imagine).

This isn't addressing anything, by the way. It's probably further incriminating them since they're taking inside action, but saying "here's something new" isn't actually addressing the situation and they shouldn't be let off the hook.

We can be optimistic and hope that this PIC is stored in a safer location than pins and is impossible to hack

This almost sounds like the security system Korean MapleStory uses at character selection. When you click your character in KMS, you get a prompt asking you to type in a 7 digit code. You can type it with your keyboard and use the soft-keyboard system.

Don't know what I did, but I've only ever seen that once.

Soft keyboard annoys me quite a bit... especially if they give you the whole alphabet, randomly placed. I'd probably set my PIC to 111111 or something if you had to enter it on the soft keyboard.
If it lets you use both I might alternate between them by habit but only as much as I used the PIN (4 letters no more)

seriously, Why add the option to type? gives keyloggers more power

Because if I can't type it, I'll be setting it to the easiest thing to hit on the soft keyboard.
My pin is 1111, have fun with that tidbit of knowledge. If it comes down to the PIN being the only thing protecting me I'm fucked anyway, what does it matter?

That's because it only asks you as an option. If you hit escape when that window came up, you skip it an never get it again. If you entered a security key, you have to enter it every time you want to log in on that character.

Incriminate them if they take action. Incriminate them if they don't take action.
Incriminate them if they take responsibility. Incriminate them if they don't take responsibility.
I guess they're screwed no matter what they do, eh

So what is this exactly? Instead of a password and a pin, it's basically two passwords?
To be honest, I'd rather have this along with the pin system. Why'd they have to remove that?
