Easy enough to test, equip a polearm, roar, note about 10 strikes, calculate average. Equip a spear, repeat. If the numbers differ greatly, you have found the answer. I'd guess its not based on that though.

Testing method is sound, especially when documented via SS or Fraps.

The Paladin single-target attack Blast looks like a stab, but for damage purposes it still has the 3/2 swing/stab ratio in effect. It's especially noticeable for BW users, where stabbing is ineffective.

Neither. It's actually calculated with a 4.0 multiplier (average of stab and slash).

For reference I'm the one who came up with that number and it was by doing pretty much what CarrionCrow said - Roar about 10 times noting max/min damages (at HHG so def is not an issue) and then figured it out. Only used a Polearm though cause my DK hasn't got spear mastery.

Learn something new everyday.

I assumed it used slash/stab ratio -- honestly never paid attention to the damage I did with it -- good to know its stable damage
