Lost Genres of music
#1
I dislike the idea of a genre of music becoming TOO wide.
I like looking around in sub-genres and making easy generalizations.
...
I understand that SOME genres grow- like classical genres- we are talking Elvis to Soundgarden- thats a lot of bands and a lot of time- but it is classical- so the makes some sense.
...
BUT THEN THERE IS ALTERNATIVE! OMG!!Tongue
When I first heard alternative it was- Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins and etc.
But now ANY and every band is alternative.
If you can't find an actual sub-genre you MUST be alternative. There have to be at least 1 billion alternative bands now.
If some says "Hey Daniel check out this sweet Psychobilly band"
I think awesome I'll give this a try-
....
If some says "Hey Daniel check out this sweet Alternative band"
I think PINEAPPLE Probably a load of BLEH!
..
And I like alot of "alternative bands" like the White Strips etc etc.
But still. The genre is so big and filled with other crap that the term makes me think illy of it.
...
Emo is really becoming the same thing
As is hardcore- both of those styles have EXTREMELY EXTREMELY different root sounds than their current
And people just hurl any band they want under those genres--
"Oh they are whining... Must be EMO"
"Oh they are yelling- not metal- must be hardcore"
....
Bah.
I am just glad the sub-genres I like aren't all bogged down with 5000 billion bands that sound nothing alike.Glitter

Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins were more grunge than anything. Same with Cranberries and any other band along those lines. Alternative is more like Third Eye Blind, Goo Goo Dolls, Incubus, etc.

I think White Stripes fit more in the experimental rock category than alternative.

Most whiny songs nowadays end up being emo. Most screaming songs nowadays end up being...uhm...emo. Or Hardcore. Or Screamo, whatever it is. I don't know, I don't mind screaming if it's done right. Killswitch Engaged is a perfect example of that. The guy screams, but the whole thing isn't just him growling or screaming. He actually sings too, so good on him.

Point in case.
You guys are ACTUALLY pointing to the TRUE idea of grundge.
But Grundge was swallowed up by Alternative.
As was Experimental Rock as was Pop Indie.
ALTERNATIVE IS TOO BROAD A TERM!
and people use it too much.
....
Meh now I am thinking its like
Metal
or
Punk
Or
Country
-Each has dozens of sub-genres.
Maybe Alternative Rock is just the nor Punk or Metal and thus it must be alternative-
At least that is one alternative.Wink
...
Can we say Jimmy Eat World (later stuff) is alternative- I like them.

I think the three I listed up there aren't grunge. As well, I was meaning more along the lines of good screaming, not what's hardcore and whats not. Anything thats just screaming is most times blech.

I think YOU are just giving alternative too broad of a term. That's like saying Metallica, Sublime, Def Leppard, STYX, and Stray Cats are all rock. Yeah, technically they are, but they're nowhere near all the same thing.

Maybe I misspoke- I mean to say ALTERNATIVE is a catch-all for many people that don't care to invest in naming Genres.
....
It's the same people who are into one of 5 categories of music (thus they only Name five)...
It is never the guy that is all- "Daniel check out this 3rd wave ska band I found..."
That guy knows what he means. And he says what he means.
...
As opposed to someone just blathering on about some Alternative Rock band that actually is some Norwegian Rapper born in Lao.
...
Meh I just looked at Wikipedia (cause that is a legit sourceTongue) and it fields Alternative rock as an umbrella term for independently signed bands-- With is what Indie bands used to be.
...

I've now confused myself.

I'm horrible with genres... but when I think of "alternative" I think of like Silverchair (when they first started).

Anyways why ya'll gotta bag on Neil D. and Kenny G. They are kick ass you guys Frown

Back to topic: When I think of a "lost genre" I think of like... Disco. Wait. That NEEDS to be lost.

I AGREE WITH YOU.

All these sub genres are so dumb, of course all bands/singers are different but there's no point making a whole new genre just because someone decides to do something creative (unless it has never been done before which is rare nowdays) Tongue soo much confusion can be avoided.
